Hiding From the Dead: Epilogue

The world had changed more than ever in only 5 years. The outside still was pretty messed up, but our little land had grown for the better.

There I was, on a cloudy afternoon, sitting on a small rock, watching Nina and Zoe help with the garden. There were fruits on one side and vegetables on the other.

The skies seemed gray, which we were happy about, because gray clouds meant rain, and rain meant the pond outside the terrain would fill and that meant we would have tap water, which I didn't quite understand how it worked, but I was happy we did.

Between the garden and the rock, 9-year-old Jayden and Vale went back to their childhood games while watching over 3 little feet running around.

Kenzie, or Little Red, as we called her, was playing with the tips of her red flaming hair while sitting against the wall, because as she said it, she was too big for those games, even though she was only four.

Malakai, was playing a game of hopscotch on the dirt, along with his twin sister Malia, or at least they tried to, because their three-year-old feet were too small to jump as high as they wanted to. While they did that, Ricky screamed at Vale that she had to watch over her brother and sister, because hopscotch was a "very dangerous game". I chuckled at Vale rolling her eyes and mocking her father.

And on the other side, along with his uncle Jayden, was my little Lucas. He had a huge mind for a two-year-old. Liam would put him a toy car, somewhere in the area and he wouldn't stop until he found it.

I looked up at Liam walking over me and smiled.

"Hey." He said pecking me on the lips. His brown hair was a little longer than usual, because I hadn't had time to cut it. He looked over at Lucas and we both chuckled. "Did he find the car yet?"

"No, but he's about to." I answered Liam, while we both watched Lucas. "And he just did." Lucas found the car behind a small rock, and ran towards us. I grabbed him in my arms and sat him in my lap with a smile.

"Mommy, look." He said, saying 'ook' instead of look. His big blue eyes sparkled while looking at the car.

"Oh, my god, what is that?" I asked, surprised and Lucas smiled.

"It's a car." He said and I gasped.

"Yes, it is a car. Good job. What color is it?" Lucas giggled.

"Red." He said and pointed at Red and then at Kenzie. "Red, Kenzie, car, red."

"Yeah, Red and Kenzie's hair is also red." He giggled and then touched my belly.

"Little brother or sister." He said, with a smile on his face.

"Yeah, you are going to have a little brother or sister." I touched my belly as I felt a kick. I placed Lucas' hand on my belly and the baby kicked again. Lucas gasped with a huge smile on his face. "Did you feel the baby? He knows you are here and he loves you." Lucas giggled and hugged my belly. He took the red car and placed it on my belly.

"You and me will play with this car." He smiled, misspelling some words and I looked at Liam. We knew Lucas would be a great big brother, and we couldn't wait. Just three more months.

We felt a couple of drops falling on our heads and took the kids inside the bunker. It has started to rain hard.

We passed through Steel's dog house, well, wolf house. They boys had built him a comfy house out of wood, with a bed on one side and his water on the other. He loved it.

Lucas yawned a couple of times which indicated it was time for his nap. We were still fixing what would be Lucas' room, so his crib was still on our room.

He laid on his crib and smiled at us. I caressed his brown hair and he yawned again. He moved sideways, closed his eyes and started chewing on his lower lip. I chuckled. Liam stood beside me so I rested my head on his shoulder.

"Look. He does the same thing you do." I chuckled. Liam did too, but then sighed, and grabbed my hands, pulling me to the bed. He had a serious expression on his face, so I frowned in curiosity. "What's wrong?"

"This morning, when Ricky, Red and I went out, we found a group. They were scientist, or something like that, I'm not sure. They told us that the world was changing." I frowned again as I didn't understand what he was saying. "Apparently, for some reason, all the kids that were born post zombie apocalypse, are somehow immune to the virus."

"Are you saying that Kenzie, Malia, Malakai and Lucas are immune?" I asked in disbelief and he nodded.

"They said they are working on something with other kids. Not a cure, but something to kill the infected, to kill the virus, to stop it from spreading. There's a chance of getting the human race back." We'll finally get our world back?

"How long will that take?"

"They said it could take years, but the world will change for good. The kids will be fearless of the outside. We'll be free."

For the first time in years, I had hope in humanity. I had hope that someday, we would finally stop... hiding from the dead.

Author's note:

Ahhhh! Hiding From the Dead is finally finished! I'm so exited but at the same time so emotional! *crying*

I'm really sorry the epilogue was so so short, but I couldn't think of a better way to end it, because apart from everything, they kind of lived "happily ever after".

Ugh, I'm so going to miss Bree and Liam, though. They were the ones that cheered me up when I was sad, but like everything in life, things are bound to end.

I really want to thank my mom and my grandma for helping me whenever I had writer's block. I couldn't have done it without them so, thanks a lot to Mami and Mamá!!!

I just really hope you enjoyed my story! And thanks for reading it! Bye, bye! *Cries even more*
