Hiding From the Dead: Chapter XVI

We were on the left side of the street, so while bending over, we counted the 7th house. I really hoped that was the house.

We ran through the backyards until we got to the 7th house. There were a couple of stairs that led to an aluminum backdoor. Liam turned the door knob slowly, and it was unlocked.

He started pushing as slow as he could so it wouldn't make a noise, and I almost cursed out loud when it started squeaking. Liam looked at me and shook his head no. I nodded. We are this close, we have to.

He sighed and pushed it again. It squeaked a little more, but then it stopped. We finally got inside. It lead to the kitchen, which we walked in while crouching, and hid behind the counter.

Liam peeked through the corner and hid quickly. He looked at me with his eyes wide. He mouthed "guard". Fuck. I peeked and saw a huge guy with a gun standing in front of the door. A woman appeared which I recognized.

"Psst." I said and Liam pulled me to him. He mouthed "what are you doing?", in which I responded by taking the picture of Red's wife and showing it to him. I peeked again. Liam tried to stop me. "Psst." I said again and she looked towards me. She looked at the guard and for a moment, I thought she would tell him.

"Alex, my friend." She said and I closed my eyes, hiding behind the counter, next to Liam. "You look like you need a break. Why don't you go and eat something, while I guard the door? They are just two little kids, they won't get out." She said and I looked at Liam, smiling. They are here!

"Are you sure, Zoe?" He asked and I heard keys jingling.

"Yeah." She said. "You go eat something and take a break." We heard the keys jingling again and footsteps walking away.

Footsteps approached us and I was about to die of a heart attack. We saw a shadow above us and when I look up, there she was, with a smile.

"Hey. I'm guessing you are here for the kids." She said and I nodded, in shock. I can't believe that actually worked. She actually helped us get rid of the guard. Oh Jesus, I love her and I don't even know her.

Liam and I stood up and without hesitating, I gave her the picture. She looked at it, shocked.

"Wh-Where did you get this?" She asked and I saw tears about to escape from her eyes.

"Red. He gave it to us." I told her. She looked at me like I had just told her the biggest lie ever.

"Red is dead." She said and I shook my head no.

"He's alive. He told us how to get here after Victor, or however he was called, threw him out of the car and shot him in the leg." Her expression changed to anger.

"Ugh, that asshole. He told me Red had been eaten by zombies. Fucker. I actually believed him." She snorted in anger and clenched her jaw.

"If you help us get the kids, we'll take you to him. He's with two more people from our group. He's safe." I tell her and she smiled showing me the keys. There were about five keys.

She looked both side and looked for the right key. Liam leaned over my ear.

"I can't believe this is working." He said and I looked at him.

"Don't jinx it." This still isn't over. Although, I'm pretty confident we can get out of here with no one seeing us.

As soon as she opened the door, I walked downstairs. I saw a girl tied to a pipe with handcuffs, who Zoe started helping. When I looked to a corner, my body filled with joy.
