Hiding From the Dead: Chapter III
It was dawn already and we were lost. Our sight of the city was gone, replaced by trees and desolation. There was no one. No humans and no zombies. I'm sure they were going to stay for a while in the city, where there was more people... or more food.
After a while of being lost in the middle of nowhere, the car turned off. No, no, no, no, no! The tank was empty and I was sure there wasn't a working gas station anywhere. Or that there would ever be one again.
"No..." Why is this happening to me? I just laid back in my seat and cried. Liam placed his hand on top of mine.
"Hey, we are going to be okay." He said, caressing the top of my hand with the tip of his finger. I knew that he was lying. I knew that he wanted to cry as much as me. Jayden woke up with a yawn and poked his head between me and Liam.
"Bree? What's going on?" I took him in my arms and kissed his forehead. "Why are you crying?" I decided I couldn't keep telling him everything was going to be okay when it wasn't.
"We are going to have to walk and find another car." Liam looked at me with wide eyes.
"Walk?! Are you crazy?! We are going to get killed the minute we get out of this car!" Jayden looked at us both as Liam screamed.
"We are going to get killed if we don't get out of this car." I told him, trying to sound calm as possible for Jayden. Liam laid back on his seat, putting both hands on his hair, and he let out a frustrated sigh. "There's nothing here right now. We might have a chance if we walk." I hated the idea more than anything, but walking may have been our only chance of surviving.
"Fine, let's go." He said, getting out of the car, checking for anything around us. I opened the trunk, because we weren't leaving any food to get wasted.
Liam helped me get the clothes out of Jayden's backpack, while I took it out of mine, because I wasn't letting any guy go through my underwear.
We put everything we could fit into the backpacks. Every can of food we brought on the box, we put on the bags. After that, they were heavy as hell, but I was sure we could carry them.
"What are we going to do with the water?" I asked, as it was something that had slipped my mind. But we couldn't with all of them because someone had to carry the knife, just in case.
"You take two and I'll take too." Yeah, Bree, how stupid of you to not think of that. Note the sarcasm.
"Yeah, but who'll carry the knife?" I tried not to sound rude, unlike what I actually wanted to say.
"Fine. I guess we'll leave one here. You take one plus the knife." Honestly, this is stupid. Carrying gallons of water to I don't know where is useless. Yes, we need the water, that's for sure, but carrying them? Trust me, I'll leave them at the first sight of a zombie.
"Fine, one gallon wasted." I said, opening the back door so Jayden could walk. And off we went.
"Jayden, you are going to stay behind Liam and in front of me, okay? And if you see something, say it." I told my little brother and soon as we started walking.
"Bree, I'm scared." He said, hugging Tiger, tight.
"I know. Just keep your eyes opened. We'll get somewhere safe in no time." I kept tried to sound calm for Jayden, but I was as scared as he was.

I'm not sure for how long we walked. There were still trees everywhere around us and I didn't know when we would find a house to rest on. I just know I lost sense of time. My back hurt, my arms hurt, my legs hurt and I was all sweaty. The weather wasn't helping either. The sun was shining bright in the sky, which made my back and the top of my head burn.
