Hiding From the Dead: Chapter VII
As we planned, we got inside zoo. We all checked the with care for any zombies and after that, we all did what we were assigned for. Everything was depressing. Most animals were dead, except for one lion, which had eaten the lioness.
Liam said me and him would go hunting while Nina got in an empty cage with the kids to make a fire. Ricky would stay with Steel in the gate to keep any zombies from getting in while we hunted.
We walked towards the lion cages with one of the shotguns. We both had guns in our pants, but we were sure it was better if we used the shotgun. We stood in front of the fence and looked down for the lion. It was sleeping next to the eaten lioness on top of a rock.
I felt a little sad we had to kill a lion, but my hunger was bigger than that. Liam looked at me and handed me the shotgun.
"Umm, no, you do it, I'm fine." It's better if I save myself from another huge embarrassment. Liam smiled and looked at me, grabbing one of my hands.
"Not everyone knows how to shoot. It's alright. Come on, I'll teach you." He told me and I shook my head no. "Come on, Bree, it's easy." Yeah, easy for you.
"Did you see me shoot when we got out of the armory? I'm a mess." I told him and he got close to me. Liam, you are too close.
"You are not a mess, you just never shot a gun before." Yeah, I've never shot a gun before, which is why I'm a mess. Duh!
"How do you know how to shoot?" He looked at the shotgun, smiling and then back at me.
"My uncle, the one with the bunker, would take me to a shooting range every time I went to visit him in New Jersey. I got better with time." He held my hand and we stood in front of the gate.
"Why didn't you told me you knew how to shoot?" I took the shotgun in my hands and looked at it.
"Cause I think bragging is for jerks." I chuckled and he moved his head towards the fence. "Okay, this shotgun right here, is a Benelli M3 Super 90. It has only seven rounds, so you have to make every shot count." I nodded "Rest the shotgun on one of the holes in the fence." I did as he said. "The end of the shotgun has to be on your dominant shoulder because when you shoot, you need something to hold it. Be careful, cause shotguns kick. With your non-dominant hand, you will grab here."
He took my left hand and put it on the bottom front of the shotgun. "You will pull the trigger with your dominant hand, but don't put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot." I took a deep breath and nodded. "You are going to look through here and if this small thing is on your target then you'll hit it." I felt his breath as he leaned in to show me where I had to look. I felt shiver down my spine but try not to move.
He put his hands on my waist and I looked at him with the corner of my eye. Umm, what are you doing? "You are too tense, loosen up a bit." Of course I'm tense! Your hands are on my waist!
I relaxed my muscles and took another deep breath, trying not to say anything. "That's it." I looked through the top of the shotgun and he did the same. His hands were still on my waist, so he pushed me a little to the right. "That's it. You got him. Take a deep breath, hold it, don't move, and shoot." Okay, I got him.
My heartbeat accelerated as I started getting nervous. I took a deep breath and pulled the trigger. The sound echoed through the entire zoo and the kick of the shotgun hurt my shoulder. Ow! Fucking bitch! That hurt like hell! Dammit! I closed my eyes because of the pain, but didn't say anything.
