"I'm sorry, Ange, we can't find him."
I let out the breath of air I've been holding, clearly upset. "Look here, 'Liza. My wedding is in two hours and if Father isn't here to walk me down that damn aisle then... I-" a tear fell down my face. "I don't know what I'll do..." my sister sighed, taking my face in her hand softly. "Angie... I'm sorry... I know he hasn't been the best Dad to you..." I scoffed.
"He missed my first day of school, the spelling bee in fourth grade, and my high school graduation. I'd say he's the worst father ever." I clenched my fists together. "It'll be okay. Let's get you ready and see if he shows up." Liza said, though she sounded doubtful. I sighed, giving in. "Fine." She smiled, turning my chair to face the mirror. There was a knock at the door. In popped James, Peggy, Laf and Maria.
"Can we help?" Maria asked with a smile. I nodded. "Of course." They came over and started to change me into the bride I had to become.
When they finally finished, I looked at myself in the long mirror. "Angelica..." I could tell James was going to cry. Eliza, Peggy and Laf already were, and Maria was nearly there as well. "I love you guys." I turned around, hugging them all tightly. "We love you too." They smiled. "I'll let you guys get changed." I said, and they all walked away to do so.
While I waited, I took out my phone and texted my father.
Me: are you coming?
Father: coming to what, girl?I sighed. I took a picture of me in my wedding dress and sent it to him.
Father: that was today?
Me: yes, I told you so
Father: I'll make it up to youI raised my eyebrow. I sent him another picture, the same as last time, but this time, my middle finger was up.
I didn't check the response.
I walked out and saw everyone gathered together- everyone but my dear Thomas. I smiled when they saw me. "Hey."
"Dad's not coming?" Peggy asked, a frown on her face. I shook my head. "He forgot. Probably drunk."
"We'll walk you down, sis." Eliza smiled. Peggy nodded. "Okay." I grinned. I looked at each of my friends happily, when I suddenly heard the music. "It's starting. See you on the other side." I smiled. "On the other side." They all said in unison.
Susan and Maria walked out first, throwing their flower petals. Then Laf and Herc walked down together. Next, James and Dolley walked down. Then it was Alex and John together. Finally, it was my time. With Eliza and Peggy on my arms, they led me down the aisle slowly as everyone stood. I paid no attention to anyone but Thomas. God, he looked so handsome.
Both of our smiles were growing by the second, and by the time I reached him, our faces were nearly split apart. "You look so beautiful." Thomas whispered softly as the preacher started his speech. "You still look so poofy." I teased quietly. He chuckled. The preacher man wasn't even halfway done with his part when Thomas cut in. "Apologies, good sir, but if I may." The preacher went silent and nodded, gesturing for Thomas to go.
"A-Angelica, I know that this is something I never thought I'd be doing with you... hell, I'd never have imagined I'd be getting married to a woman half as amazing as you. You are so... so beautiful, intelligent, independent, inspirational, amazing and just so... so perfect. I know that I don't deserve anyone like you-" there was a faint 'no, you really don't!' come from the people. Probably Alex. "See. Anyway, Angelica, I promise to protect you in times of need, to provide for you whenever and wherever. I promise to stay on your good side, because I really don't want to see death this early on." I laughed along with everyone else in the room. "And I promise that I will always be there for you, and never, ever hold you back."
"Thomas... I... before I got to know you, I only saw bad qualities in most people, even you. I was so hidden away in protecting my family, I never had time to look deeper into people. When we got closer, I started seeing more light. I discovered that you weren't so bad after all. I know that you have changed my life for good, and definitely for the better. You gave me something to believe in once I knew you believed in me." I saw a glimmer of amusement in his eyes. I guess I really raised his taste in musicals. "I promise to be there by your side, loving you forever and always. I promise not to kick your ass too hard, I'll go easy on you."
"Thomas Jefferson, do you take Angelica Schuyler to-"
"I do."
"Angelica Schuyler, do you-"
"I do."
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now-" Thomas pulled me into a deep kiss, dipping me down. "Kiss the bride." He finished, waving his hand. There was loud cheers coming from the crowd. He lifted me again, breaking the kiss softly. "Hello Mrs. Angelica Schuyler Jefferson." I laughed happily. "I love it." Thomas' eyes were bright. "And I love you." He picked me up bridal style, making me squeak, and ran down the aisle, out of the door. He spun me around, moving his hands around my waist and pulled me into a deep kiss.
Angelica Schuyler Jefferson. That's me.
