A New Avenger

Waking up

I woke up. There was bright lights and I was in a hospital bed. I had a tube under my nose blowing air. How long have I been out? There were beautiful flowers on my nightstand.I looked around and I saw the shield symbol on the door. I also saw Thor sitting in a chair next to me, reading. I'm not alone, thats a relief. I looked at his arm, it had a huge burn mark and was covered in blisters. "Thor?" I questioned. He put the book down and leaned on my bed. He had a slight smile on his face but he had bags under his eyes like he hasn't slept in days. He reached for my hand and said "It nice to finally see your beautiful eyes." I gave him the best smile I could at the moment. I felt so exhausted. Still looking at Thor I said "I have so many questions right now. Like where am I? What happened? The last thing I remember-" he cut me off "Don't worry about that now Esme. You need to rest. I'll be right here to explain when you feel better." I held his cheek and said "Don't worry about me Thor. It looks like you need some rest, I'll be fine." He gave me a weak smile and said "I can't just leave you alone." Still holding him I responded "then send a nurse in if you must but you need to rest as much as I do." He nodded as if to say okay and thank you. He brushed the hair off my forehead and gave it a kiss. And with that he left.

A couple moments later, Fury walked in. I was expecting the usual stern face but this time it was different. His face was laced with emotion. It looked as if he hadn't slept in days either. He had his hands behind his back and was doing his usual slow stroll as he spoke "Esme, how are you feeling? You've been out for...a while now." The way he said 'a while' caught me off guard. I didn't know how to respond so I just said "How long is a while?" He gave a slight chuckle and said "You didn't answer my question." I sat myself up and said "fine. Where am I?" Fury looked at the huge symbol at the door and said "Considering the huge bird on your door it's S.H.I.E.L.D." I made a short sigh and said "I know that, but are we at H.Q?" He stopped his stroll, looked my strait in the eye and said "No. We're at a S.H.I.E.L.D medical facility in Italy." I felt the blood rush out of my head. They wouldn't take me all the way to Italy unless i was in pretty bad shape. I couldn't think of anything to say. Luckily Fury spoke first "Look, I know you want answers right now, but that's not what I came in here for. I came to do something I rarely do. I've been feeling a little guilty about the whole Cat and Loki escaping thing. I should've seen that coming. And what do I do? Go and make it worse and let them work together. and um......I'm sorry....." I couldn't believe my ears. Was fury apologizing? I didn't know he did those sort of things. I fixed my position awkwardly and said "It's fine Sir. I wouldn't believe me either." He looked at me again and said " Very well... You have to rest. See you at 0800 tomorrow if your feeling better, we have a meeting." I nodded and he left.

I sat alone again. Even though I felt exhausted I couldn't sleep. I have so many questions that needed to be answered. I heard a knock on the door. So naturally I yelled "Come in." I was expecting to see like Thor or someone but it wasn't, it was an agent I've seen before. I didn't know her name but her face was vaguely familiar. She came in and said to me "Hello Esme, I'm Agent Reed. I've been taking care of you." She walked over to the cabinet and grabbed a needle. I got the chills and asked "Can you answer a few questions for me?" Agent Reed bobbed her head to the side and said "I'll try." I sat up even higher and began to question "Do you know like, oh I don't know, how long I've been out?" Not even turning around searching through small viles, she said " about ten days." The way she said it, it sounded like nothing. I felt like I've been hit by an ongoing train. I wanted to scream, TEN DAYS?!?!?! but that would've been embarrassing considering to her it wasn't that long. I took a deep breath and asked "Can you explain what happened?" She stopped searching and walked over to me. She looked me strait in the eyes for a moment then began "You were in the field. They didn't tell me how it happened but when you came, your eyes were open. Your eye color changed from the beautiful blue you have now, to the brightest red I've ever seen. You were not blinking, but you kept mumbling the same words over and over again. We couldn't tell what it was. They told me you unintentionally exerted your powers. They also said you were uncontrollably angry at something that was said. We weren't sure what to give you because we were afraid your powers would react with the medicine. Eventually your eyes closed and you fell into a deep sleep. Ten days later, well, here you are." ....Now that's a lot to take in. I felt like freaking out. I know that's why no one else would tell me so I just pretended to let it roll off of me. But for sure I was lighting on fire again, on the inside of corse. I couldn't help but feel like she left something out. Something important. She walked back over to the viles and gave an "A-hah." She put blue liquid in the needle, walked over, and stuck it right in my arm. No warning, no nothing just a stab. I grabbed the sides of the bed as she began to do that twisty thing with the needle. I wanted to smack her hand but instead I just took a deep breath.  She pulled the needle out and said "That should do it." I looked at the tiny hole in my arm beginning to bleed. She came back and pat it with a napkin. Not stopping she said "Your a lucky girl you know. Thor sat in here for ten days by your bedside. People brought him food because he refused to leave.he asked me what the constant beeping noise was , I told him it was your heartbeat. I had said at least a million times that he needs to go rest but he told me he was afraid that if he left, the beeping would stop. I tried telling him that it was highly improbable it would stop because you were just unconscious but......he wouldn't listen." She glanced at her watch and said "Speaking if Thor I'm supposed to go get him right around now. I'll be back later to check on you" I finally released my grip on the bed and looked down. The metal was shaped like the grooves of my fingers. I hope I don't get in trouble for that.

I felt really drowsy but I was still trying to process the shit load of information that was just given to me. I heard big familiar footsteps when Thor walked in. He looked like he'd just woken up. He sat in his usual chair next to my bed and grabbed my hand. He looked at me and said "Agent Reed told me she just gave you some medicine to help you sleep. She said that it was important now that you rest. I'll be right here when you wake up." My eyes felt really heavy as he leaned and gave my forehead a kiss. I decided that I couldn't stay awake anymore but I didn't have to. I went to sleep feeling safe, but not content with the answers.
