Chapter 1: Unending Nightmares

Link’s POV

I had a nightmare again.  The same nightmare I had yesterday, and the day before, and the day before.  I’m lucky if I get more than 5 hours of sleep, or even luckier if I don’t dream at all.  I’ve been having the same nightmares my whole life.  A nightmare of a little boy getting left in the Lost Woods by his parents, never being able to get out, never finding a way through the woods to get help.  Who is this little boy? If you must know it’s me.  No, my parents didn’t leave me in the Lost Woods to die, but they did leave me.  I don’t remember my mother or father.  I don’t remember if I even had a sister or brother, or any siblings to be honest.  My childhood was spent with a family in Ordon Village.  They had a daughter that was about my age... I think her name was Ilia? I don’t really remember. Probably because I left at age 9, and spent the next 8 years living on my own in the forest.  The people who took care of me in the Village, told me they found me down by the river, just by the tall grass, in a small basket.  My mother probably put me there to slowly slide into the river and drown, because I know she never wanted me.  The family that raised me never wanted me, I know it.  The most caring person I’ve had in my life was probably my step sister Ilia.  We would always play together and tell stories with the fairies that flew around in the dark at night.  Of course I miss her, she was my best friend.  But she needed better friends than me, I’m just a good for nothing 17 year old boy, with probably no future that was abandoned by his parents at age... I don’t even know what age, but I know I was a baby.  My everyday life involves waking up, going to the market to steal food because I have no money, coming back and just doing nothing all day.  I’m a “couch potato” as some may call it, or in my case a floor potato because I have no furniture, just a small mattress and stove with a counter on the side.  Like my life? I’d trade it any day for someone elses. Especially if that someone had a family.  This morning started out okay, I got dressed and headed off to Castle Town like usual to steal some day old bread from the bakery, until I got busted and dragged into the prison grounds... Which is where I am now.  I’ve been sitting here... or laying here on the ground for about an hour now probably.  I counted cracks and chips on the stone ceiling.  I could barely hold my eyelids open because I was so tired.  ‘Oh well, what could they do to me for sleeping?’ I thought.  I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Zelda’s POV

I sat on the side of my bed as I slowly awakened in the morning, it suddenly got very chilly.  The sun was just rising, and I could smell the chefs baking and cooking breakfast all the way from downstairs.  I stretched my arms up and yawned.  I stood up and went to my dresser.  I grabbed a more casual light blue dress, with longer sleeves that went just past my elbow, a pair of brown flat shoes, and thin white arm warmers for it felt a little chilly today.  I set my clothes on my chair in the corner and walked into the bathing room.  I took the already boiled water and poured it into the bath water to make it just warm for a nice bath.  I took off my sleeping gown and climbed into the bath, tying my hair up so that it would not get wet.  After bathing I dried myself and went to get dressed.  I slipped on my blue gown.  It wasn’t formal, it was very casual. just a normal faded blue, that looked like it would turn into gray if it faded more.  It just touched my ankles at the bottom, showing my brown leather flats.  It was a straight dress, with a rounded neckline just under my collar bone, and the waistline inward a bit showing my curves a little.  The sleeves were loose, and the bottom of the sleeves hung off my elbow a few inches.  I slipped on my arm warmers and tucked them under my sleeves to seem like I was wearing a white undershirt.  I went over to my mirror, and brushed my hair a few times over the visible knots.  I have thick, blonde hair that reaches to my waist and is layered at the front parts a little.  I took a plain black hair tie and tied the top half of my hair into a loose pony tail, then brushed through my shorter bangs that hung over my forehead and the side of my face.  I heard my stomach growl so I decided to go down for some breakfast.  As soon as I came down the stairs and walked into the dining room my nose was overwhelmed with the smell of freshly baked bread, just out of the oven.  I went into the kitchen and saw the rolls laying on the counter. ‘I know I shouldn’t...’ I thought. Oh well, one roll wont be missed. I went up to the counter and carefully took a roll.  It was a little warm still from the oven, I carefully took a bite out of the side.  I giggled a little knowing I’m probably not supposed to be eating this right now.  I snuck around the corner and went to the backroom that showed the garden.  I opened the door and went out back to the garden. I sat down beside a tree on the little porch we have. I took another bite of my roll when I saw one of the housekeepers appear on the porch.

“Zelda, those rolls are for todays guests we’re having.” She said.  I slowly chewed my roll then spoke.

“Oh . . . Sorry.” I gave a ‘sorry! I’m innocent!’ smile and shrugged my shoulders a little.

“It’s alright my Princess, we’ve already prepared your breakfast, it’s in the living room down the hall, I know you like eating while you read.”  I jumped up at the sound of my breakfast, I was still hungry.

“Okay! Thank you so much, Linda! Oh! don’t bother making my bed or laundry this morning, i can do it myself, okay?” She smiled and nodded at me.  I quickly walked through the hall to the living room.  As I entered I saw my father, the King of Hyrule, sitting at the desk on the right side of the room.

“Hi Father.” I simply said.  He looked up at me and smiled.

“Good Morning my angel, how did you sle . . . Those rolls are -” I finished for him

“For todays guests we’re having, I know I was told.” He laughed a little under his breath  “And I slept well, though it was a little chilly in the morning.”  I said taking a seat on the small couch beside the table that had my breakfast on it.

“Yes I had the same problem today as I was waking up, but it is autumn, the weather is bound to get more and more colder.” He said reading a paper on his desk.

“I know that, but I do miss the summer weather.  Being able to wear my summer dresses, and going for walks in town and laying in field. It’s nice”  I started to eat the breakfast I had.  Toasted bread with butter, a glass of milk and berries in a bowl on the side.

“I like the dress you’re wearing now, is it velvet?” He asked looking up.

“Yes it is, so it keeps me warm.” I said before eating a few berries.

“It looks nice, the colour really brings out your beautiful blue eyes.” I looked up at my father and smiled at him.

“Thank you.” Was all I said.

He stood up “Well we have very important guests arriving today from far away, I shall go prepare,” He started walking over to me “Pick out your best gown for tonight, and tell Linda to do your hair very nicely.” he kissed my forhead “Good Morning my Princess” He said before leaving out the door.  I sat there and finished my breakfast. I stood up and looked around the bookshelf for any interesting books I’d like to read. I found one. ‘The Skull kid of the Lost Woods’. I was always interested in mythical books and creatures.  I was fascinated, and always wondered if they actually existed or did exist a long time ago.  I sat down on the couch that I was sitting on before and began reading.  I saw many pictures of what people thought The Skull Kid looked like.  It supposedly hated adults but loved to play with children because he felt accepted that way.  I kept on reading.  Soon I started yawning and my eyelids became very heavy.  I slowly drifted off into a sleep still holding the book on my lap.
