While waiting for the lifts, Amber took out her phone and continued reading.
1. Monitor and Maintain Bodily Functions:
· Take temperature readings every 4 to 6 hours. Pulse, respirations and blood pressure should be monitored in high fever as these vial signs may indicate complications. An increase in temperature is usually accompanied with increased respiration and heart rates
· The person's behavioural changes such as confusion, restlessness or disorientation should be noted in high fever
"High fever's really bad isn't it?" she mumbled to herself as she walked into the lift and pressed her floor number.
· Check the state of hydration since fever tends to be very debilitating and dehydrating
· Fluid intake should be increased to replace the fluids lost through insensible water loss and sweating. The inclusion of soups is recommended because of their sodium content
"Good, porridge is just right."
· Provide measures to stimulate appetite and offer well-balanced meals to meet increased metabolic needs
"I'll just have to open the cover of this," she stuck her nose into the bag for a sniff, and sighed in satisfaction, "Ahh, wonderful."
When Amber returned to his room, she was delighted to see Kris all washed-up and reading a thick stack of papers on his bed wearing a t-shirt (lightweight clothing) like a good boy.
"I bought fish porridge," she announced, taking off her shoes. "But first I need to check your temperature."
Amber set her things on the table, and then ripped open the plastic to take out a thermometer.
"My mum usually checks my temperature by putting this under my armpit. Where do you usually use it?"
"Same," Kris said, eyeing the thermometer as if he had never seen one before, behaving like a little boy. Amber lifted his right arm and slid the thermometer gently under his armpit. Luckily his sleeves were wide and loose so that was easily done.
Kris moved around uneasily because the cold metallic part was sticking into his freshly-shaved armpit and it was ticklish. Finally the signal came and Amber removed it to see the reading.
"38.8 degree Celsius! That's almost 39, and 39's high fever!"
Amber put away the thermometer and brought the porridge. She opened the plastic cover and said, "You have to take a Panadol. Eat this porridge first."
A delicious aroma of rice and seafood filled the room. Amber carefully took a spoonful of porridge from the top part and blew over it, then fed it to Kris. As much as Kris liked to be fed by Amber, he didn't want Amber to have breakfast late. "It's okay I can do it on my own. Let's eat together."
"Careful, it's hot," Amber passed it over. The smell made her hungry too. She opened hers and started eating. Because of the steaming hot porridge, the two were too busy blowing over the food to talk.
Amber decided to let the porridge cool down for a while before eating it. She took out her phone to continue her reading.
2. Promote Comfort:
· Provide oral hygiene to keep mouth and lips moist
Amber was startled at first, but quickly snapped out her dirty mind-set. She felt her face getting hot. Clearly she had been with Henry way too much and he was giving her all the bad influence. Now she hated the word 'moist'. Ew, dirty word, yuck. Next, next.
