Gray's POV
"What the hell?!" I cursed as a chilling dread hits me. Did they just... is that really Juvia? My heart won't stop pacing as my mind went blank. My feet moved on their own and I ran to the emergency room's door, peeking at the glass. A doctor watches everything in a calm manner, despite how the nurses around him seemed frantic and scrambled to hook Juvia onto different machines, including an oxygen mask. He seems to have instructed a female nurse of robust build to straddle onto Juvia and... Are they doing chest compressions? Just what the fuck is going on?
The doctor seemed to have noticed me and it looks like he had instructed the nearest nurse to close the curtain. That same nurse then opened the door to the emergency room and before I could ask her, she said, "Are you related to the patient?"
"I'm her husband—"
"Husband?" The nurse scrunched her eyebrows together and looked confused.
"Yes."
"I didn't know that the patient is married. Her records say she's single."
I let out a frustrated sigh and ran a hand through my hair and took a deep breath.
"It's complicated, but if you need papers that'll prove that we're married, I'll give that to you later. But please tell me, what happened?"
"I'm sorry that I couldn't disclose that information as of the moment," the nurse told me, "but the doctor sent me out here to assure you that we're doing the best that we could. For now, please wait here and I'll have the doctor see you afterwards to explain."
I bit my lower lip as I looked down, trying to stop myself from punching the wall. I try to breathe evenly to calm myself down as I watched the nurse return to the emergency room.
Please be safe Juvia.
Third Person POV
The doctor who attended to Juvia at the emergency room watched as the heart rate monitor showed slow and erratic heartbeats.
"Defibrillator on standby, doctor." A nurse wheeled a defibrillator in the pod and he nodded and signalled to begin attaching the leads. The nurse who was doing chest compressions stopped briefly to allow the other nurses to disrobe Juvia to her waist.
"Stop the chest compressions. We will proceed with defibrillation. Let's charge at 150 joules, and we'll resume compressions afterwards." The doctor said as he started charging the paddles and applying gel on Juvia's chest.
The defibrillator started sounding off, signalling that it was charged.
The nurse who was doing chest compressions on Juvia carefully hopped off the bed as the doctor took hold of the paddles and placed them on her chest. He watched as a nurse take off the oxygen mask from Juvia's face.
The doctor looked around the bed and shouted, "Clear!"
All the nurses moved away from the bed and the shock was delivered through the paddles on Juvia's chest, the electricity jolting her body upward momentarily.
The doctor assessed Juvia quickly.
"Okay, she's breathing better but she's still on bradycardia. Let's push 40 units of vasopressin and put her back on oxygen, stat."
The nurses around him moved fluidly, doing what the doctor commanded.
"Let's see if there will be improvements after two minutes, otherwise, we'll have to defib her one more time." The doctor commanded. He doesn't know Juvia, but he knows that she was quite the gift, the most celebrated patient of Dr. Porlyusica's recent discoveries to treating head tumors. They all don't know her personally but they want her to live not just because they had a reputation to protect, but because she is their patient and she is the only one who made it this far. They have put their faith in her that one day, she can pave the way to help many, many people.
