It was lunch hour at Rose Valley High. Every student was out and about, either having lunch in the cafeteria or doing their homework for next period. The schools football team, Rose Valley Bulldogs, were out on the field, training for the schools pep-rally on Friday, taking every opportunity to get ready for the game. The sun was surprisingly warm around this time of year, not a single cloud in the sky. But there was still a strong cold breeze blowing through the small town of Vermont. Leafs were changing colors and the days were getting darker and colder – sooner than ever.
Sixteen year old Zayn was sitting on the top of the bleachers with a notepad on his lap and a 2B pencil in his hand. His earbuds were placed in his phone as he listened to his Spotify Playlist, the song Love by Lana Del Rey playing. He hummed along to the song, leading his pencil gently along the paper. He's been sitting here for the past twenty minutes now, minding his own business and just sketching whatever was on his mind when he noticed something flying towards him. His gaze lifted from the papers and he released a loud – not to mention very unmanly – shriek. He flinched as the football flew passed him and under the scoreboards hitting the lamppost which was a few minutes away rather harshly, causing it to violently shake.
His eyes grew wide and he looked down spotting some of the football players laughing and mimicking the boy's reaction. Zayn could feel the blush rush to his cheeks, his hands gripping his notepad. His heart felt as if it just jumped out of his chest, inhaling a deep breath to calm himself from the incident. Though, he doubted it even was one.
It wouldn't have been the first one either. Stuff like this always happened to him. To be completely honest, Zayn wasn't the most popular boy in school. In fact, he was the outcast. The guy no one liked or barely even talked to in the hallways. He was a lone wolf, as some would like to call themselves. The anti-social that just wanted to spend their weekends locked up in their room and eat every bit of junk food they hid in their house. The junior didn't have a group he could hang out with. Since the high school he was attending was very stereotypical. Like the ones in movies. You had the popular kids. The mean girls. The junkies. The nerds. The drama club. He didn't really see himself in any of these groups. In a matter of fact, no one really wanted him in there anyways because of his so called 'image' that the jocks labeled him.
He never understood why people hated him so much. He always made sure to stay out of their way and be quiet yet they still took every opportunity they had to push him around and call him names like worthless, teachers pet, faggot. Was being gay really that wrong? Did he do something to deserve all the tormenting? Those were questions he couldn't answer himself, nor as anyone out of fear.
The boy looked back down at the jocks, his eyes meeting with a pair of soft familiar chocolate orbs which stared back at him. His heart skipped a beat in his chest and he blushed madly as soon as the lad sent him a small smile. Right there was standing his crush since middle school. Liam Payne. The schools star quarterback and the guy every girl wanted to be with. He was successful in every class, rich, talented with the sports, charming good-looking and was in a long term relationship with the captain of the school's champion cheerleading squad. Figures. Every high school had that one specific, cliché, popular couple – and that was Liam Payne and Sophia Smith.
