"A reader lives a thousand lives. A man who never reads lives only one."
My eyes shot open and I curled into a ball. I woke up on Dally's lap with his arm around around me. Sodapop was standing in the bathroom doorway glaring at us.
"Get up. We gotta get Ponyboy, also time for you to see your new school." He stated as he put on a fleece shirt.
"Ughhh" I groaned. Careful not to wake Dal, I slid out from under his arms onto the ground and sat up. Putting my hair up into a ponytail, I told Soda, "Do I really gotta go to school? I mean I could get a job and help around here?I hate school. Way too many rules that don't make no sense!!"
"Take that one up with Darry. You know what he'll say." He responded. He shouted Dal to wake up. He got up and stretched, and picked me up and twirled me around.
"Good nap, Doll?" He looks peaceful almost, his face relaxed. Then it returned to his cold hard stare.
"Don't call me Doll. And yes actually." He rolled his eyes. He leaned into my shoulder and whispered "Doll." I turned around and pulled him closer. Trailing my hand down his chest I whispered back, "Asshole." I smirked and pushed him away.As we pulled up to the school Ponyboy and Johnny were already walking towards us. Lots of nasty looks were shot towards me. I sat in the back with Dally, his arm around my shoulder. The boys finally got to the car and jumped in.
"How was it? Did you make the team?"
"No..." A sad look ran across Pony's face and he said so. "I made Team Captain!!"
"No way!!!!" Soda exclaimed.
"DID I MISS TRY OUTS!?!?" I wanted to try out for Track. I'm a fast runner but my foot.
"Yeah im sorry Ky." Soda said
"No." Johnny interrupted. "I told him about you and said you were pretty fast. He said as soon as you're healed he will let you try out."
"R-REALLY!?!?" I turned to face Johnny. I loved to run.
"Yep!" His deep brown eyes flickered down to where Dallas held my hand and back to look at mine.
I leaned to him and kissed his cheek, I was so happy!! "Thank you s-so much Johnny Cade I owe you a h-huge one!!" He blushed real hard, his whole face turning red. Dallas held my hand tighter and glared at me. I winked at him.
When we got home I watched the guys play some football outside, quite sad from the fact I couldn't join. I loved football too. Dal kept looking at me while playing and he seemed... distracted I suppose.
He sat down next me, all sweaty and gross, and to my surprise, apologized.
"I'm real sorry you can't run, or play football. Soda told me you love it and watching you watch us made me feel a lil bad. Don't go telling the gang I got all mushy and apologized for something."
I opened my mouth to respond but he was already running back to the game. I smiled to myself. I was falling for him, hard. By the time the game ended all of the boys were sweaty, dirty, and tired. Soda carried me inside. All the boys went their separate ways for the night leaving me, Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally watching some cheesy movie on the TV set. Pony sat next to reading a book.
"Watcha reading horseman?" I snatched the book from his hand, careful not to lose the page, and scanned it. Love in the time of cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. "What is it?"
"A book you idiot." He returned to reading.
"Duh. But what's it about."
"Love. Romeo and Juliet Type of thing only... different." He responded without lifting his eyes.
"Classic. Didn't know you were into that stuff." I smiled. Dallas stifled a laugh.
"Yeah didn't ya know Ky? Our little Pony is quiet the poet. Always has his nose stuffed in a book." Dal rolled his eyes and walked towards us.
"I-I'd like to read that once your done Pony." I said ignoring Dally's comment.
"Not another book worm." He sat down and put his hand on my thigh. I, once again, pushed him away. "Aw come on Doll. Don't play hard to get." He whispered in my ear as he put his hand back on my leg. I let him this time.
"Hey Johnny Cade. It's gettin kinda late, do you love far from here?" I asked him.
"Nah. I sleep in the lot not too far." He kept his eyes down and hands in his pocket, he looked so tense all the time. I could help that.
"Why there?"
"I Uhh-
"He just likes it better there." Pony interrupted. "We'll talk later." He whispered in my ear quickly.
"Ahh okay."The next few days went as usual. Hanging around the house, cooking, reading, watching tv. Dallas kept at me and Soda and Darry kept yelling at him.
"Darry I really don't wanna go to school" I complained as I ate breakfast.
"Kaya.You're going."
"Ughhhh. Later Dar." I groaned as I grabbed my bag.
"Don't get in any trouble Kaya. I mean it." He shouted as I walked out to meet Ponyboy and Two-Bit outside and we started walking.
"Aren't you a little old to be going to school?" I aimed towards Two.
"Sweetheart im 18 and a Junior. I go to school for kicks."
"Ahhh. I hope we have some classes together."
We kept walking for a few blocks without trouble until we got to the school. It was huge. There were so many people, they all looked so different. Some looked nicely dressed with blouses and skirts and some wore leather or jean and skin tight leggings. I wore a T-shirt and ripped jeans. Clearly the fashion was different. Not to imply I went with the fashion in California. I dress according to my mood.... or budget. As I walked into the school with the two boys, I got lots of looks and snickers.
"HEY GREASE!!!" Some boy yelled and threw paper at us. It took a lot to not yell back so I just smiled and flipped him off real nicely and walked inside the building.
"I didn't realize we were greasers..." I whispered into Pony's ear. He just smirked and winked at me.
"Later Pone. Come on Ky." I waved at Ponyboy and Two-Bit grabbed my hand and started running. It didn't hurt to run anymore. Two helped me open up my locker and put my books in there. I heard whistles as boys walked by and Two-Bit yelling at me to back off. Comparing my schedule to Two-Bits, we realized we had all but one class together.
We walked into our first glass: Geography.
