"False hope is better than none."

I shifted the car as I slowed a little to turn. The race was a mile which was double the normal I had raced before. I had a far lead on him. I yelled out in joy as I drove faster and faster. Everything I was feeling was quickly whisked away by the wind. My hair was held back by a bandana and hair tie. I saw him slowly gaining on me as we came closer to the finish line.  I looked in the mirror and raised my hand in the air and stuck out my finger. As I placed it back on the wheel a cat came into my sight. If I crossed into his lane I was disqualified but if I didn't the cat would most likely die. I slammed the horn as I came closer and closer. The cat jumped out the way quickly before I ran over it. In those few seconds i lost a lot of time. He was right behind me as came back to full speed. The finish line was close. Just a few more feet. I left him in the dust as I crossed.

I slowed myself to a stop and turned the car around, I far passed the line. The Soc stood in disbelief.

"Who are you?" He asked as he stood under the moonlight.

"I'm a Curtis." I smirked. He was very handsome but nothing compared to Dallas. Soda walked up and hugged me from behind, lifting me into the air.

"How bout we grab a coke sometime at the Dingo?" He smiled at me. "A date." I stood in disbelief that someone has asked me on a date.

"How bout you just gimme the money before I-

"Back off Todd." Soda pinched my arm before i could finish. Todd handed him $800 in cash and walked away cursing under his breath.

"You won!! No? You didn't just win you did amazing!! Where'd ya learn to drive like that?" Soda walked with me to my car and Dallas.  I smiled as he punched me in the arm.

"You're still going?" Soda asked Dal and I.

"Yes." I said, not meeting his eyes. Soda clearly faked a smile and walked away. We got into my car and I drove home.

"You could've gotten hurt." Dal said sternly. I looked at him like he was insane. It was my life and he didn't have that big of a say any longer.

"That's the thrill of it Babe." I looked out the window to avoid his stares. More like glares.

He grabbed my thigh and looked straight ahead, when he pulled into the driveway we didn't get out. "Don't scare me like that again." He looked me in the eye and I swear I saw a tear but it was too dark to tell.

"Do you love me?" I said without thinking about it.

"Kaya you-

"Nevermind. What did you want to tell me earlier? Before we got to the race?"

"Nothin Just wanted to give you this." He reached into the back seat and grabbed the bag he was carrying when he got back. I set the bags in my legs and I smiled a real one at Dally.

"Dead cat?" I giggled like an idiot as he held my face in his hands and smiled back as he said "No." I slowly took out its contents. A black leather studded dog collar, a two-piece lingerie, 3 packs of cigarettes and a small box.

"Oh my god." I smiled huge a I took everything in. "You bought something for my dog!!!" I reached over and kissed him.

"Our dog. Open the box." Our. I grabbed the box and hesitated before I opened it. It held a small locket. I looked at him before opening it. Inside was the smallest picture of us. All of us. As a family even if we really weren't really a family. It had all of my boys and even Stormy. How did he manage to get all them to sit still for a picture? I smiled up at him, gratefully. I could see the guilt in his eyes as he smiled back.
