"She's made to do the one thing I'm afraid of... she's made to fall in love with."

"Kaya could you run down El Mercado and get all of this?" Tia handed me a list full of groceries.

"Si tía. Ya vengo." I grabbed my car keys quickly. "DALLAS!! LUKAS!! COME ON!!" I started the car as they followed me. We drove to the little Mexican market and started to get the things on the list. Dallas pushed me around in the cart as I grabbed random items off the shelves. Tiny plastic cups, hair curlers, sunglasses and watermelon lollipops. I popped one into Dal's mouth as Lukas told us the things on the list.

"Coca-Cola." He said as he pushed the front of the cart toward the beverages.

"And vodka!!" I smiled at Dallas who nodded in agreement. We turned a corner, the alcohol only a few feet away. Lukas stood in front of the cart and stopped walking.

"Maybe we should get the meat first." He started to push the cart backwards.

"Why? What is it?" I hopped out of the cart.

"Kaya-

"Nicole?" She stood by the drinks with a basket in her arms. In the alcohol area... as usual. With actual food that you have to cook, not packaged. I did not want to see her. Ever. The sight of her makes me sick. Why did I even say her name?

"Kaya? What're you doing here? Who's this?" She started towards me to give me a hug but I pushed her off. She was used to this. She only pretended I was there when others were around or if it benefited her. Other than that she ignored my existence or hit me. A lot. I would leave the house with cuts and bruises covering my body, but that's when Logan came in.

"Don't touch me. This is Dallas." I slipped my hand onto his back and tapped.

"I thought you were gone... for good." She stiffened her body as she realized they weren't important to her image.

"Not that easy to get rid of me Nicole, but nice try." Lukas started to pull me away, he knew me and my mother would get into a screaming match anywhere. And at anytime for anything.

"Wish it was. Should've let your druggie dad take you." She stepped towards me and I did too.

"Don't call him that."

"But he was, a druggie. You were no use to me any way. Only an inconvenience like him."

"Get the hell away from us. Don't talk to her like that." Dallas said, pushing me back.

"Don't talk to me like that. I am her mother and what are you? A street rat?"

"He's my husband." I said. Boyfriend meant nothing to her. Husband was different. That meant he had more authority over me than she did. It meant he had more power.

"Your what!?!?" You could practically taste the anger in her voice. "After one month!? Such a whore. Desperate." Dal opened his mouth but I stopped him.

"Let's just go, she's a lost cause."

"Husband?" Dallas whispered over my shoulder as we walked away, I held my fists so tightly the knuckles turned white.

"Yeah, only way she would've stopped."

That night we all stayed together, we all sat on a port with everyone there. Old and new. They all sat laughing and drinking and smoking. I wished this moment would never end. I wish I could trap myself in this moment and never let it go, but time ruins everything. Dal and I stood by a lightpost. Johnny and Ponyboy splashed the water lightly with their bare feet, I could barely hear them talking about how the stars were like looking back in time.
