Chapter Eighteen
On Your Last Dying Breath.
Clary's P.O.V.
“She said she was going to check something out, where is she?” I asked Damon as I leaned against a tree trunk. It was hot today and the last thing I want is a sunburn. I consider myself lucky that my ankle is completely healed so early. These so called nurses don't know crap.
“Clary, I'm worried. Things like this shouldn't have taken her so long.” I nodded. “Yeah I'm worried too. Did you see her face when you mentioned the bathrooms?” He nodded with a sad look on his face.
I hated to see him when he was sad. He always gets this way when Lightning disappears. Why does she have to be so irresponsible all the time?
I ran my hands through my red hair and started making my way to the girls bathroom.
“Where are you going?” Damon asked.
“To check the bathrooms, you go check the cabins.” I left it at that and searched through the bathrooms. No Lightning to be seen. I made an irritated noise and kicked a rock into the gate.
The gate clanked and shivered slightly from the impact of the rock, but my eyes were focused on something beyond that.
Someone with long black hair was on the other side of the gate; carrying someone over their shoulder. That someone had very long white hair...Lightning...
I turned on my heels dashed to the front gate. I didn’t bother looking for Damon, I didn’t have time to wait. Stumbling into the forest I ran in a straight line through the forest. He couldn't have gotten far. That monster can't just take Lightning from me!
I ran blindly into tree branches and stumbled over roots and shifting stones. I hated forests or really anything that isn’t the city. Everything wants to make a meal of you! The only reason I'm here is to be with Lightning and Damon over summer before I leave for France. Though at this rate of things I won't even leave this damned camp.
Panting I slowed and came to a stop. I've got no clue where I am going and I'm chasing after a wanted killer. What in hell am I doing!? Normal people go to summer camps and return with smiles on their faces not emotional scars that will never go away.
I kicked another rock this time it bounced off a tree and into a bush. Look at me... standing here while Lightning is smuggled over the border to death. I shook myself violently and started running again. Lightning was there for me at my worst...it's time I paid her back.
I was eight years old and in the hospital room again. Everything was white, machine's beside me were beeping and ticking.
“LIGHTNING,” I cried. “Lightning I don't wanna die yet. I don't wanna leave the world yet!” I clenched her hand as she smiled down brightly at me. Her eyes were glistening with tears that will never leak down her face. She was so brave. Momma said I should grow up and be like her some day, but I don’t think I could ever be like her.
“Stop crying Clary, you'll waste your energy. Everything is going to be fine, the Doctor is a really smart woman and she is gonna do everything in her power to keep you well.” I wiped my tears away. “I'm scared, w-what if I don’t-” She wrapped her hand around my mouth and tapped my head softly. “Don't you dare say that. You are going to be fine and Damon is on his way from England to see you, so you gotta live!” She pushed her white hair out of her face. “Plus, this God guy owes me a life.”
At that moment a woman in a white coat walked into the room. Her Blonde hair flowing beautifully to her shoulders and dark almost black eyes stared into mine. Fear and panic rose like a flame in my chest. I wasn't ready for the surgery yet! The woman laughed softly and held out a hand to me.
“Hey sweetie my name is Dr. Grace Hudson. I will be preforming your heart surgery today. I just wanted to let you know you are in good hands here. My nurses and assistants work fast and well together, you will be fine.”
I was nudged slightly by Lightning who stood and shook Dr. Grace's hand. “You take care of my best friend, alright?” Dr. Grace's smile widen. “Of course!”
I sank into my bed that I had laid sick in for the last three days. Lightning had been with me every moment. She only ever left my side to use the bathroom.
“Don't you worry, sweetie. I'll take great care of you.” The woman walked to my side and checked off a few things on a clip board. “Your surgery will start in one hour.” She left the room in silence and Lightning stood dead still at the end of my bed.
She whispered something softly and shook her head. “What was that?” I asked her crawling across the bed to her.
Her head was down, the white mound of hair on her head blocking her face from view. “Lightning?” My voice cracked as I grabbed her cold hand.
“Clary...” She said in a gravely voice. She clenched my hand and pulled me into a hug. “You gotta promise me you won't ever die on me. You can't leave Damon and me, we need you.” I hugged Lightning with everything I had. I wasn't gonna die. Not now, not ever! Lightning and Damon were counting on me to make it through this!
“I promise! I won't ever leave you or Damon or anybody, ever!” Her body shook slightly as she let out a relieved laugh. “Good.”
She and I talked the whole time until the lady in the blue nurse uniform walked in.
“Sweet heart it's time for your surgery. You need to come with me.” She pointed a slender finger at Lightning.
“NO! She has to stay with me!!!” I screamed. reaching out for Lightning's hand, but only received a soft pat on the head.
“Clary you'll be fine,” She hugged me tightly and tugged a strand of my long red locks. “I know you will be, you promised.” I smiled. “Yeah, that's right.” I pulled away from her and stared into her bright blue eyes.
“Get outta here so I can get this over with, ok?”
She nodded and kissed my forehead. “I'll be waiting for you when you're finished.” I watched as she left the blindingly white room looking back at me with a reassuring smile.
I looked to the nurse with new eyes. “I'm ready.” I said bravely. She nodded and put me in my wheelchair.
The trees and bushes whipped past me just like the memory. She gave me courage. She made me brave enough to go through with the surgery. That surgery saved my life. I owe Lightning everything I have and more. Close ahead I could make out a small opening to a large clearing.
I slowed to a walk and peered into it.
An amusement park? What in the world is a place like this doing here?
