Chapter Twenty.

Striking A Deal With A Stranger.

Clary's P.O.V.

"WE ARE NOT FRIENDS!" He yelled. I recoiled back a little bit, before breaking down in a fit of laughter.

"Ha you think I consider you my friend? I don't even know you. Ever heard of stranger danger?" Did he honestly I considered him a friend? I just met him and honestly I don't even want him to be my friend.

I laughed continuously only to be stopped when a hand covered my mouth lightly.

"I said you need to calm down, lay down and get some rest Claris-" I grabbed Jack's hand and held it away from my mouth as I spoke in a serious voice. "Please just call my Clary or Clare. I hate the name Clarissa."

With a quick twist of the wrist, Jack held my hand in his own. "Please, just- sleep Clare. You need the rest." I groaned and pulled my hand away. "If I was tired I would sleep, but I'm not." I reached out beside me, looking for something like a lamp to turn on, but I soon gave up on trying. "Could you please turn a light on. I hate being in the dark."

He tried to tell me I'd be scared of him more but I ignored him. "I don't care what I see, I hate the dark more." Which was true, I was tried of the dark. I wanted to see Jack and the room I was in. I've hated being in the dark since I was little.

Jack growled a firm no at me and laid something across my lap. I'm pretty sure it was a blanket. The same one he threw at me earlier. I crossed my arms. "Why not, and don't you dare say it's because I will be scared."

Silence.

I let out a loud aggravated grunt. I know I was being childish, but I wanted answers and I would do just about anything to get them. He doesn't like it when I ask him questions and he really doesn't want me to see where I was. He wants me to sleep...

I bounced upright with an idea. It was a win-win for the both of us! "Hey Jack, how about this. If you turn on the lights, I'll lay down and sleep."

Jack let out a sad breath. "Trust me Clare, if you see me and the room you are in... you wouldn't want to sleep."

"Trust me Jack, I don't care. I promise to lay down and sleep if you turn the lights on." To be honest curiosity made me want to see where I was more than the fear of what I was going to see. I mean what was the worst I was going to see here? A bunch of dead bodies hanging off the walls?

I rolled my eyes. I guess that could explain the bleach and lemon cover up scent.

"Fine, but put the blanket over your eyes so the light doesn't blind you..." I putted the soft material over my head, wincing slightly when the blanket lit up with the lights. A shadow cast itself over the blanket and a hand reached out to grab the blanket.

"Now take the blanket off slowly and keep your eyes closed until you can adjust to the lights." I squinted and lowered the blanket slowly until it was completely off my face.

As much as I hated to admit it, he was right, it was bright and I would have gone blind if he just snapped the lights on. Squinting around the room, I could barely see a thing. I could barely make out Jack pulling a chair across the floor to the side of the bed I sat on.

After a few moments, my vision started returning to normal and the true horror of the room I was in starting to sink deep in my chest. I was sitting in a murders home.

Rust colored stains painted the walls. The dark oak floor was covered in it as well. It was a horrible site. I looked around more and saw a window, but thick black drapes were pulled to block any light.

Jack sighed, "And now you see..." I froze in place. A cold sweat breaking out on my forehead. I turned slowly to face Jack, the man who probably lived in this room and killed the people the blood belonged to.

But before I could face him completely, I asked the one question that would answer all other questions. "Did you kill the people that were in this room?"

He was quite for a moment before answering in a lifeless voice, "Yes...I killed every last one of them and I regret nothing for it." I let out a ragged breath. I was going to be his next victim wasn't I. He was going to murder me just he did everyone else.

My hands started to shake violently and my breathing quickened.

Something reached out to me from the corner of my vision. I jumped away from it, causing me to start falling from the bed.

Just before I struck the ground something wrapped around my waist and wrist stopping me from colliding with the cold wood surface. I looked up at Jack and gasped.

His face, i-it was horrible. He didn't have any eyes! They were just endless black orbs and seeped down his cheeks. I stared wide eye as he leaned down to the side of my head and whispered tenderly in my ear.

"It's rude to stare at a blind man, Clare." He pulled back and looked down at me as if he could see me clear as day. "I said I wouldn't hurt you, nor do I want to, so you don't have to fear me like all the others did." He pulled me gingerly back onto the bed and sat on the side of it. "Now you promised you would sleep, so please. Lie down and get some rest, you will be safe here."

He stood, leaving me speechless as his tall frame walk away from me. He opened the door at the far end of the room and turned toward me. "And whatever you do. Don't open any of windows of doors for anyone not even me. I have my own key, so I can get in on my own." With that he shut the door softly and locked it into place.

I sat in the bed staring at the door for what felt like years. I didn't know how to think, how to feel...I was petrified. Before long I finally laid down on the bed and fell asleep.
