Waking up slowly, I saw the sunlight streaming in through the window. Smiling, I rolled over to glance out the window at the sites below. Sitting up, I stretched feeling all my muscles start to quiver. Relaxing the pose, I stood up and grabbed my robe, throwing it over my large shirt and shorts. Heading down the stairs, I walked into the kitchen and greeted my parents with quick hellos. Grabbing down a mug, I opted for tea this morning. Rifling through the drawer they were normally kept in, I frowned when I didn't see. Turning to shoot my mom a look, I saw her walk over to a cabinet and pull down a box. Sighing I took it out of her hands and started to sort through. Deciding on a raspberry tea, I poured hot water on top of the tea bag and let it sit for a few minutes. Grabbing a couple pieces of toast, I popped them in the toaster and waited for them to pop up. Grabbing them out, I spread butter and strawberry jam on them. Taking the tea bag out of my cup, I squirted a bit of honey into the cup and stirring it walked over to the table. Sitting down, I tore a piece of toast off and started to munch on it sipping my tea slowly. My dad got up and left the table. Glancing at his retreating back as he walked out of the house I held in a sigh and picked at my food. After a few more minutes the silence from my mom was slightly unnerving so I got up to put my toast in the garbage and deposited my dishes in the dishwasher before dashing upstairs to change. Getting out of the shower I walked into my closet, looking over the options, until I heard the door open softly. Sticking my head out the door to see my dad standing in the doorway, I motioned for him to sit on the bed, while I closed the closet and threw on a sleeveless navy romper that was cinched in a the waist with a brown belt. Stepping out of my closet, I saw him looking at a picture of Jesse, Stephen and I from beside my bed. Plopping down next to him, I rested my head on his shoulder and looked at the picture with him. The three of us were in a dog pile, with me on the bottom. I was looking at Stephen and Jesse murderously while those two just smiled at the camera. Snorting out a quick laugh, I heard my dad's soft chuckle as he stroked his thumb up and down the picture frame. Sitting in silence for a few more minutes, I let him have the time to collect himself. Turning to look at me, I saw the fierce protectiveness and a hint of sadness in his eyes.
"You don't have to go back you know." Nodding slightly, I bit the bottom of my lip as he continued on. "I was wrong to make you go the first time but now we just got you back and you want to go again. You don't have to. I know he isn't the same Daniel as before but I want you to have a choice too, punky." Smiling I threw my arms around his neck and noisily kissed his cheek.
"Dad, you don't have to worry about me. I know how to handle myself. If he gets too unbearable, I'll just come home." Crossing the fingers on my left hand, I think he could sense the lies as he narrowed his eyes at me.
"Madelyn, nobody thinks you are a failure or a burden. We have never thought that and we never will. If this doesn't work out, you are coming home." Rolling my eyes at him, I pulled my legs up to sit criss cross.
"Dad, I'm going to be fine. The pack needs me. He isn't the same Daniel and I'm not the same Maddie. Heck even Stephen and Jesse respect him more now!" I flung out exasperated. I could feel myself getting angry as we rehashed last night but I calmed down before I spoke again. "Dad, Daniel has been away from our pack for long enough. I'll come and visit all the time and I'll call you twice a day. You knew this was going to happen though." I told him gently.
"I know but I wasn't expecting the day right after you woke up." He said petulantly, almost like a child who has had his favorite toy taken away. Laughing at his tone and his facial expression, I hugged him close to me. Hugging me back slowly, he kissed my forehead. Breaking away he stood up and looked out the window. "Well, I have to go finish training the boys for their duties. I need them able to take over for me so I can go and check up on my favorite girl more." He said moving towards the door. Sighing, I heard him chuckling and whistling down the hallway. Rolling my eyes. I looked around my room and moved my unpacked suitcases, next to the door. Taking out one more, I quickly put the rest of my stuff in it and latched it shut. Hearing a soft knock at my door, I saw Hank standing there.
