Chapter 16: Best Friends

Sitting on the couch, I told Devin what had happened. I left out exactly what Dylan had said, I didn’t think it would help to get Devin more worked up than he already was.

“I’m going to kill him,” was all he said as he got off the couch. Sam grabbed him and pulled him back down to the couch, with a little bit of effort.

“No you are not. You know the rules. Don’t start breaking them now. What if the king’s guards find you? What will happen to Kitty?” that last part seemed to hit home with him as he wrapped his arms tightly around me and glared at Sam.

“Nothing is going to happen to Kitty, but what do you expect me to do? Sit here and let him hurt her? I’m not going to let that good-for-nothing ass get his hands on her,” he hadn’t risen his voice, but I could hear the power in it. I moved closer to him, burying my head in his chest, trying to get him to calm down. His fingers, almost absentmindedly, moved through my tangled hair.  The tension started to leave him and he started to relax. Sam sent me a small ‘thank you’ smile and started to talk to Devin now that he had calmed down.

“You know I’m your best friend and I don’t think that Dylan should be doing this shit either but that doesn’t mean that you need to take drastic measures. I don’t want to see something happen to you just because you want to get back at your brother. You might be one of the king’s favorite and his son’s best friend,” he gave a little smile my way at that information, “but that can’t get you out of every situation. You have to think.” Devin just nodded, like he does when he is acknowledging information.

He didn’t seem to like it, but he obviously knew that Sam was right. I waited to see if Devin was going to say anything, but he just let out a defeated sigh and looked at the ceiling. I crawled into his lap so that I was sitting across his knees. I wanted to talk to Sam about them being best friends without having to go over top of Devin. Well, I was technically over top of Devin, but thats not the point here. Devin simply put it arm securely around my waist and took hold of the hand that was farthest from him, to make sure I wasn’t going anywhere. He still had his head tilted back towards the ceiling, so that meant that he didn’t mind my new seating arrangement. Thats good, because I wasn’t moving.

“So,” I said looking directly at Sam, drawing his attention fully to me, “If you two are such good friends, how long have you been friends?” He smiled at me and patted my head.

“Always curious,” he was starting to make me feel like a dog with all the patting so I lightly swatted at his hand.

“Enough,” my voice was fierce but obviously playful, “are you going to answer my question or not?”

“Okay, okay. Me and Devin have been friends since he came to the castle at the age of 10, 452 years ago,” he looked at me, obviously waiting a reaction, but I didn’t give one. It didn’t surprise me in the least. I just simply turned my head so that I was looking at Devin.

“Does that bother you?” I smiled at the question as I looked into his half lidded eyes.

“Not at all,” it was the truth and he could see that it was, “I’m 87 so it makes sense. Although, you may be older, but I’m still taller.” jumping off his lap before it could sink in what I had said, I rushed into the other room. Hearing the shrill sound of Sam’s laughter, I started to laugh as well. Starting to think that he wasn’t going to come after me (which would be a first on a short joke) I began to walk into the other room once again. Thats when I felt his strong hands on my waist.

“Where do you think you’re going?” said a dark and raspy voice sending a shiver down my spine. His warm breath moved against the skin on my neck. “Well?” he pulled my hips back against him, making me lose the words I was going to use to answer, but then he dug his fingernails into the soft flesh of my hips, prompting the words out of me.
