Chapter 13: Blood

My mind slowly slipped out of the lands of dreams, but I didn't want to open my eyes. Not just yet. I steadied my breathing to make it seem like I was still sleeping because I didn't want to disturb Devin, who still had his arms wrapped protectively around me. I felt comfortable, and I never wanted to leave his warm embrace. He started to stir and I looked up to watch his eyes flutter open. Looking a little dazed at first, he looked around until his eyes landed on me. The corner of his dark red lips tilted up in a half smile, then he lightly kissed my forehead.

"Good morning my love," I say, a smile etched across my own features.

"Good morning my sweet," his voice was deep and slightly sluggish as he still tried to wake up. He lightly ran his thumb across my cheek as we just laid there, looking into each other's eyes. Neither one of us wanting to move. He slowly moved his fingers along the base of my jaw, causing me to tilt my head back slightly. He took this opportunity to lightly lay his lips on the exposed skin. The simple touch made me close my eyes, but a thought jumped into my mind.

"Devin?" I asked, slowly running my fingers through his hair.

"Yes?" came his reply, his face still buried in the curve of my neck.

"When was the last time you fed?" his body stiffened and he grew silent for a minute before answering in a hesitant voice.

"Just the other night," I was slightly hurt by this, thinking that he had fed from someone else, but then I thought about what happened just the other night.

"That was from me, wasn't it? After what happened with Dylan." I looked at him because he had moved so he was looking down at me and he nodded slowly. "Now, when was the last time you fed before that? Cause you can hardly count that."

He just looked at me for a minute until he finally answered, "A couple of months ago...."

"Isn't that bad for you though? Don't you need blood to survive? Wont you die?" I asked, already knowing the answer.

"Well, yes, but it's better than the alternative...." he ended on a mumble but I still could understand him.

"what? You don't like taking blood from others?"

"No, it's not that. Nevermind, forget about it," he looked away from me, not seeming to be able to hold my gaze any longer. Relief flooded through me, but I was still deeply worried.

"No, not nevermind," I lightly grabed his chin and had him look at me, "if it's not that then what is it? Don't worry, you can tell me anything."

He sighed, seeing that there was no point in arguing with me, "you remember when we were talking about Mates and stuff?" he asked and I nodded, "well, when a vampire finds his or her Mate, they aren't supposed to feed from anyone else. It could break the connection." He ended and I was still confused on what the problem was. Did he not want to feed from me? Was there something wrong with me or did he think that I wouldn't like it?

"So you don't want to feed from me?"

"It's not that I don't want to, because I do," he said in a rush, "but I just figured that you wouldn't want me to do that to you." I gave him a slight smile and brushed my hair off my shoulder.

"I don't mind, honestly. You've done it before. And even if you had not, it wouldn't bother me. You need it, and I would be more than happy to give you whatever you need." I smiled reassuringly at him, but it still didn't seem like it was fully sinking in.

"But.." he started to say, but I lightly laid my pointer finger on his lips.

"It's alright," letting my claws come out, I made a shallow cut at the base of my neck. Not too deep, but just enough to make the blood flow. All he seemed to be able to focus on was the little cut on my neck as his eyes turned an iridescent purple.

Voice hoarse and eyes still locked on the blood dripping down to my collarbone, he asked, "are you sure?"

"Yes," thats all the more coaxing he needed. He lowered his head down to my neck and slowly licked at the blood that had already found its way along my skin. Finally getting to the wound itself, he lightly started to suck on it. Tangling my fingers in his hair, I pulled on it lightly wanting him closer as he moved so that he was partially over me and partially laying next to me. Seeming to get tired of how slow the blood was flowing, he grazed his fangs against my sensitive skin before burying them deep in my flesh. I gasped from the sudden pain and unexpected pleasure. Devin wrapped his hand around the back of my neck, bringing me closer to him. This was amazing. It was an intimacy that could never have been reached in any other way. Pleasure ran through my veins at a constant rate, it was like nothing I had ever felt before. A moan escaped my lips as he bit down harder, opening the wound more. He had my head and my upper back off the bed and I was completely limp in his arms from the pleasure and pain and loss of blood.

After an unmeasurable amount of time, my vision started to blur so I just closed my eyes. I felt tired, even with the pleasure coursing through me. My thoughts started to blend together and nothing seemed to make much sense.

I started to feel faint as the darkness tugs of the edges of my consciousness. As if on cue, Devin's slowly loosened his grip on my neck and gently laid my head back down on the soft pillow. He brushed my hair off my face and looked down at me, smiling lovingly.

"I love you," he said before laying his lips lightly on my forehead.

"I love you too," my voice was quiet, I couldn't seem to get enough power behind my words for them to have much of any volume. My eyes get heavy and I don't fight them as they start to close. I felt Devin's lips on my forehead once again before he laid next to me. There was a muffled faraway voice that sounded like Devin. He might have been telling me to go to sleep, at least, thats what it sounded like, but I really didn't care, I was going to do it whether he told me to or not. And I slipped into oblivion.
