For the rest of the week, Trina, Brooke, Comfort and I worked hard on the play. We had to edit a few 19th century parts though. It was one of the most hectic weeks of my life. Collins was playing Rolfe and Beatrice was playing Liesl. Emmanuel was playing Captain Von Trapp.
We were over at Brooke's house the entire weekend. She had decided to add blue extensions to her hair, like Trina and Chantelle and Mia had gone for gold ones. When I saw them I rolled my eyes. You would think they would be a bit serious about the play. Comfort came over as well, with Eunice tagging along. We waited for the rest to get here so that we could start in the backyard.
"Who's directing this?" I asked. "Comfort, obviously. That's what we agreed on. I'll just have to make sure everything is okay." Brooke answered. I nodded. "So...what do I do?" I asked. She shrugged. "Go through the scripts. I don't want any mistakes when we start." I have her a mock salute as she went back into the house.
Trina came out holding a tray of smoothies. "Different flavours right?" I asked. She nodded and handed me a chilled vanilla smoothie. "She knows the others will never agree on one thing." She said, going down the wooden stairs and offering everyone a smoothie. Seyram grabbed a chocolate smoothie and came to sit with me at the picnic tables, slurping loudly while I tried to go over the scripts. "Are you trying to distract me?" I asked.
He turned to me. "Does it seems that way?" He asked.
"Yeah."
"Then yup, I'm trying to distract you." Unfortunately, I was joined by Debbie and Michael. Debbie flipped her perfect golden curls over her shoulder and grinned at me. "Do you need help with that?" She asked.
I stared at her, not comprehending what I was hearing. My arch-enemy, was offering me help, if I was not mistaken. "Are you trying to sabotage me?" I asked her.
She frowned.
"Okay, I got my revenge and I think that alone is enough. Let's just be friends. Plus it helps to know that you obviously need my help. You've been reading the same page over and over again!" She said.
I rolled my eyes and scooted closer to her while Michael and Seyram muttered about something technical stuff I barely understood.
"I think the script is okay." She said after reading the last page. "You do?" I asked. She nodded. "Yeah, I do. Who wrote it?"
"Brooke and I."
"Well it's really good. We should be able to ace this thing. " She said. I smiled. "Yeah, we should. It's due in two weeks time. " I informed her. She nodded, then leaned back into her chair.
"Everyone gets a coffee break, Comfort. We aren't going to push them so hard." I heard Chantelle say to Comfort as they both stepped out of the house. "Brooke's going to drop off the kids at my aunt's house. We can start when she gets back." Chantelle informed us.
"Cool. Michael, let's go check out that Xbox. " Seyram said. Michael nodded. "Debbie I'll see you later." He said. She nodded and waved her hand dismissively towards him.
I remembered the favour Roosevelt had asked of me and turned to face Debbie. It's not like I wanted him to help me get Mia or anything. She was a human being with choices and right now her choice was Calvin so I would leave her be.
"You've been hanging around Roosevelt lately." I said.
To my surprise, she blushed.
"Yeah. He asked me out tonight. I don't know if I. . ."
She trailed off, tracing the grains on the table.
"He's a good guy. I think you should go for it." I said.
She thought long and hard about it. I glanced towards the yard, where everyone was milling about, sipping smoothies or going over scripts. Calvin hadn't left Mia's side the entire time. Probably because I was close by. I loved to think that he was a bit insecure when I was around. I loved that he thought I was capable of stealing his girlfriend. Pfft. Wouldn't dream of it. She turned to smile at me and as the wind blew her hair back, I saw and ugly bruise on her cheek. So he had been hitting her again. I tried not to get upset. After all, it was her life. I looked away towards where Beatrice was telling Comfort and Eunice about something. Beatrice saw me staring and smiled at me, dimpling prettily. I smiled but despite the blush in my cheeks.
Finally, Debbie sighs. "I think you're right, Jemz." She said.
I may or may not have jumped in my seat and spilled my smoothie.
She laughed. "You're a good guy. Mia had no idea what she's missing. " She said. I blushed at her words and watched her go back inside to get me a napkin.
The rest of the day goes great. Seyram laughing at the others when they missed their lines or Michael filling a balloon at Eunice's head and watching he brunette curls lie flat against her head. It was really a sight. All in all, I enjoyed it. Brooke offered to drive Trina and I home.
"Roosevelt is taking Debbie out tonight. " I said.
She nodded. "Yeah. He told me." She said.
I looked out at the buildings passing by.
"Has Declan asked you out yet?" Trina asked. Brooke blushed. I laughed. "I don't think he thinks of me that way." She said quietly, eyes solely trained on the road. "Are you blind?!" Trina half screeched. I cleared the ringing from my ears. "Sheesh woman." I mumbled.
Naturally, I was ignored.
"Have you seen the way he looks at you? You have got to be kidding me." She said. "That's why I'm not kidding. " Brooke muttered. "Yeah. He has this long, googly-eyed when he looks at you." I chipped in. She giggled. "Googly-eyed?" She asked. I nodded. Trina smiled. "Yup. That pretty much sums it up. He's totally into you." She said.
I rolled my eyes.
Sure they could talk about their crushes while I was here wallowing in self pity. I didn't want to feel like this. I didn't want to like Mia. She only hurt me more and I didn't want to be hurt. I decided I would stay away from her. Just to forget about her and move on."Jeremy?" Brooke called. We were at my house now. "Yes?" I asked. She sighed. "You're too good for Mia. She's an idiot, doesn't know what she's missing out on." She said. I smiled at her.
"I'll keep that in mind."
