I had packed everything I would need for school so I only had to grab my bag and go to the kitchen for some breakfast. "Good morning Jeremy. " Dad said, patting my back. "Morning dad." I responded, biting my toast.

"You'd better hurry. Don't  want to be late for your first day of school." He said.  He sat down next to me and dipped his coffee. "I know. I'm almost done." I said.

I got in the shotgun while dad sat beside me and  started the engine.   I did nothing but listen to music throughout the drive. Then he parked in the parking lot and I alighted. "Make me proud, Jeremy. " he said. "I will dad." I said and stood staring at the car as he drove off. My hand automatically lifted itself and began to wave at the disappearing vehicle.

"What are you waving at?" A voice I knew too well asked. I turned to find Michael, staring at me and trying  hard to swallow his laugh. He wasn't  doing a very good job of hiding it. I gave him a confused look. "Waving my father." I said in a 'duh' tone, like it should be obvious. His friend, who I hadn't  noticed earlier, Leroy, spoke. "Your father? But there is nothing there!" He said.  He and Michael  walked away, guffawing.

I decided I wouldn't  defend myself from the because they'd probably twist anything I said and make me look stupid in front  of my friends.  I didn't  need an Oracle to tell me that that was what they would do.

I adjusted the strap of my bag and began to walk away when I noticed a familiar blue car park a few feet in front  of me. Brooke got out from the driver's side along with two of her brothers, Edmund and Roosevelt, and Jerry. Maybe they picked him up on their way here.

She appeared to be arguing with Roosevelt though she didn't  look angry, just confused and frustrated. Her eyebrows were bunched together and she was biting her lower lip, the way she usually did when she was concentrating very hard on something.  Roosevelt said something, to which she only rolled her eyes and the slapped him upside the head.

So she hadn't changed  a bit over the summer. He winced and rubbed the part of his head where she had hit. Then they noticed me and started walking towards my direction, followed by a very oblivious  Edmund who paid attention to nothing but his phone.

They stopped in front of me and Brooke raised her eyebrows.  "Uh . . . Hi?" I said.  She facepalmed and hugged me. I felt a sharp pain at my back. "Ow!" I shrieked.  "What was that for?" "Welcome back." She said . Roosevelt slapped me on the back. It wasn't  very soft. "Thank you." I managed to cough out.

She turned back to Edmund  and flicked his forehead. "Hey." She said. "What?" He asked, not caring. "She's means put the phone away." Jerry translated. "Why?"  He asked again. "You have to say hi to Jeremy." She said  childishly, only to get ignored. I decided  it was time for me to intervene so I stepped forward and snatched the phone from his hands.

Edmund stared at his empty hands for a moment.

Uh-oh, I thought.  It wasn't very pretty when Edmund got angry.

He slowly  lifted his head and glared daggers at me. I slowly have him back his phone.

"Edmund!" Brooke shouted, trying  to restrain her brother. It all happened so fast. Edmund lunged at me and the next thing I knew, I had crumpled on the ground.

Edmund  had punched me in the gut.

Roosevelt and Jerry struggled to contained their laughter. They weren't doing a very good job. Brooke was grinning and it was wide enough to let me know that she was enjoying this as much as they were. She was just good at hiding her emotions.

"Go ahead, laugh at my pain."

"Let's find some place to sit. We're pretty early today. That's a first." She said then muttered the last one under her breath.

Roosevelt draped an arm over her shoulder and steered her away from us. He said something and she burst out laughing.

"Ah, young love." I heard someone  say behind me. I turned to see Seyram, the eldest of Brooke' s siblings, smiling fondly at his siblings. "Young love?" I asked, raising my eyebrows.  He glared at me. "Oh shut up." He said and walked away.

Well, that went well, I thought sarcastically.  First day of school and had already been punched in the gut and mouthed off by my closest friend's brother. What a great way to start the year.

And Michael and Leroy laughing at me. You're free to add that to my list.
