Dear romantic,

You wear your heart upon your sleeve

Waving it around for everyone to see

In love with the idea of love

Not thinking of what it really means

It's not all fairytale weddings and happy endings

It's fights and screaming at three in the morning

Throwing shoes and punching furniture

Dear romantic,

That's what you have to understand

Love isn't the promise that you'll never fight

It's the very fights themselves that strengthen your love

The anger and fights are like breaking a bone

It's painful but when it heals the relationship will be stronger

Dear romantic,

You don't understand that your love won't be perfect

The other person is flawed, as you are yourself

They were not formed to be a perfect human just for you

Or to only ever agree with you and do what you wish

They are not your pet

They are not a doll

They are a human with their own mind

But dear romantic,

You may never understand this

What you read in novels is just that

A fictitious representation of what humans wish love was-

Do not read these stories and create an illusion of love

Nobody's love is the same

You will create your own story

Published with every breath you take

As the words are carried into the air

Photographed as every person around you in the street

Sees your imperfect love

So dear romantic,

Treasure the fact that this human

Who you don't own

Who has no obligation to return to you

Comes back night after night

And still believes the "I love you"'s that they whisper

And when you look at them

And see their scrunched up, angry face late at night

Know that all will be forgiven in the morning

But don't take that fact for granted

Then whisper to yourself that this is love

The solidified idea that despite the fighting

It's all worth it
