What Love Becomes

Love is the taste of her lips on my skin

The sweet softness that means

She is mine

Love is the thoughts that she doesn't need to utter

The unspoken feelings that connect us that reassure

She is mine

Love is the fairytale wedding we plan together

The acknowledgement we are meant to last forever that proves

She is mine

Love is the way she clings to me when she is scared

The belief that I will protect her from anything that affirms

She is mine

Desolation is the unbearable thought of losing her

Thinking of how painful every breath without her is that reminds me

She was mine

Desolation is the slamming doors and echoing shouts

The way she runs out the door with a suitcase of packed clothes that says

She was mine

Desolation is the wet, bloodshot eyes all alone in the dark

Hollow and lost without her next to me that screams

She is gone.
