Two months later
Emily's POV
As I walked down the halls, the things I hear people say are horrible:
"She deserved it."
"I'm glad she's gone."
"She should have done it sooner."
It was horrible things haven't been the same since she left. She used to mess around with things like that. She opened up to me before and she told me about the failed attempts. How she tried a few times. She said she chickened out and I'm glad she did. The things people were saying appalled me. If only the other people in the band heard what they were saying about her. They would be as mad as I am, ever since it went out that the girl accused of starting a fire committed suicide, It was like a frenzy. People were sad, angry, upset and some even devastated.
As I rounded the corner to the band hall I heard a guy say something that set me over my limit.
"You know she deserved to die. She should have done it a while ago. She just lifted a big weight off of my shoulders."
People thought they knew what I was capable of but they were about to find out more. I turned around and went to his table and lifted him up by the collar of his shirt and lifted him out of his chair and made sure everyone knew that I meant business. I started yelling at him and that caught the eye of everybody in the cafe.
"WHAT DID SHE EVER DO TO YOU FOR YOU TO HAVE SO MUCH WEIGHT ON YOUR SHOULDERS BECAUSE OF HER?"
"Whoa dude calm down."
"WELL, WHAT"S YOUR PROBLEM WITH HER SHE OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO YOU."
"OK, ok dude put me down... Please." He sounded almost terrified.
I let him go after I yelled at him a little more. After putting him down I already knew what was going to happen. I turned around and the principal was there waiting for me to follow him. I didn't fight him I walked proudly by his side knowing that even if that boy hated me, I stuck up for my friend which a lot of people couldn't say that about their friend. Liv and Sarena haven't been in school since they found out. Natalie dropped band completely. Mackenzie quit cheerleading and her extra-curricular. So many people have quit things that she pushed them to join that they ended up loving. It's sad really. It seems everybody who got a letter hasn't been the same. My letter was different from everyone else's. It confused me at first but then it started to make sense. I always kept my letter on me or in my locker. She joked about it but I never thought she would actually do it.
Once we got to the office I followed him to his office and sat in the seat closest to the door. He walked around and sat in his chair like nothing was wrong.
"What happened out there?"
"He was bashing my friend."
"Which friend?"
"Alexis Colyer."
He got quiet for a minute almost like a moment of silence kind of thing. He sat there and tried to figure out what to say. But at the same time, he was unsure and didn't know what words were safe to use.
"What did he say?"
" She deserved to die."
"No one deserves to die but you can't go around beating people up for saying it."
"It's not right."
"I know."
"I have a band lesson can I please go?"
"You have a detention tomorrow afternoon."
"Ok."
"You're dismissed."
Once he told me I could leave I was out of his office. I practically ran to the band room. That's where she used to always be. I wish there was a day where I could walk in and just see her sitting there looking mad at the world, or happy, or ranting about make-up. How she wanted to change her image in school. She definitely did it, but I don't think it's in the way that she wanted it to happen. When I walked into the band room Mr.B was sitting on his stool waiting for someone to come in with him. That's what he usually does when he doesn't have a lesson or any work to do. I walked in and sat the computer and logged in.
"How are you doing Emily?" Mr.B asked
"Good, I guess, I just really miss her."
"A lot of people are."
"After what I've heard I doubt that."
"What have you been hearing?"
"That she deserved to die."
"We all know that's not true."
"I know but some of the people don't."
"Yeah, but those people will soon realize that they were wrong."
"I understand that Mr.B."
"Good, I have some things to go print I'll be back."
"Ok, Mr.B."
There were only about fifteen minutes left of school after the day I've had I wanted it to end and fast. I wrote some of my paper and waited for the bell to ring. Once the bell rang I was out of the building I ran to my mom's car with the letter in my hand.
"Mom, can you drop me off at the bridge?"
"Why?"
"Because, I need to be there, Please."
"Fine, I'll drop you off and pick you up in an hour."
"Ok."
With that, I got out of her car and walked slowly toward the bridge. I haven't been to the bridge since that night. But I figured that now was the time to go, I slowly walked up the side of the bridge and let my hand drag on the cold stone. I went to where she jumped and sat on the edge with the note in my hands. I read over the note and as I did I looked down at the water and it was high just like the night she was there. High water with a fast tide, It scared me that this is how she wanted to go out.
I sat there for what seemed like forever. I read over the note a whole bunch of times to see if there was a message that she wanted me to get in time to save her. The longer I sat there the more I realized that I lost my friend, my best friends. I looked over the edge and jumped while saying:
"Friends forever, right?"
