❝BABY IT'S BAD
OUT THERE❞
___________________It was almost as if you could smell the Christmas spirits in the air. The shop fronts were sparky and clean, boasting of new Christmas offers. The weather was cold and the snow was falling.
Everywhere, the holiday cheer was visible. People were smiling a lot more, even though they were laden with heavy shopping bags, filled to the brim.
Delilah was smiling too, as she looked around in marvel. They were currently driving down a lane, wherein there was a small Christmas block party.
"Look at that," Parker said, as a he pointed to a very adorable scene.
There was a man dressed as Santa, and he kept delving into his huge burlap sack to pick out presents for the children that were around him.
"Aw," Delilah sighed, as she caught sight of a cute girl in pigtails. "She reminds me of myself."
Parker smiled, as he leaned forward to catch sight of the girl.
"She does look cute," he mused.
They continued to watch the block party, until the bus had trundled onto another lane.
"So, Parker." Delilah clasped her fingers on her lap, and stared at him. "What are your plans after this year?"
Delilah and Parker, being of the same age, were currently in Year Thirteen in their school. There was a single term left after winter break, and then it was off to university or work.
"Well, I'm saving up for university now," Parker said, as he patted the ticket printing machine. "But I've got to ace the final year exams, obviously."
"What university do you want to get into? And what do you want to study?"
Parker's cheeks flushed red, and he shyly mumbled something incoherently, as he looked down.
"What are you saying?" Delilah asked with a grin. This guy was too cute for his own good.
"Um..." He exhaled before running a hand through his hair. "Cambridge University."
"Blimey! That's splendid, Parker!" Delilah said, as she nudged his shoulder encouragingly. His face that was knotted with nervousness, now loosened up and he broke into a smile. "Why were you shy about that? You have a really great chance of getting in."
Parker was, to be honest, one of the most smartest students of their year. "I did get in," he said, smiling again. "Got the acceptance letter just last week, but the fee structure is a tad too high. So I've been trying to gather up some extra pennies."
Delilah was staring at him in awe. It was quite rare these days to find boys this passionate, this determined and this hardworking to achieve something they want. "Congratulations, Parker!" She said, her eyes round and wide. Delilah, to be fair, wasn't that smart when it came to textbooks.
Ergo, Cambridge seemed like an unattainable dream.
Of course, Delilah did have her dreams, but they were rather different.
"Thank you," Parker modestly said, as he looked down.
"What course are you going to take?"
"Chemical engineering," he said at once, his eyes lighting up. "I've been wanting to do that right from when I was in Year 9. Rememeber Mrs. Avril?"
Delilah thought hard. "Oh, she taught us the elements song right?"
"Yeah. She was the best chemistry teacher ever. She asked me to pursue this since I was very interested in chemistry, and I don't think it's a bad option as well."
"Ofcourse it's not a bad option, it's Cambridge!" Delilah exclaimed. "Some people can only dream of getting in!"
"Yeah," Parker said, his eyes gazing out into the distance. He shyly rubbed the back of his neck before turning towards her. "And what are your plans?"
"I'd probably take a gap year," Delilah said, the excitement from her voice waning away. "Sort out things at home. I don't really have the funds for university, so I might just start working too. I'm not sure."
"Oh," Parker said, as he nodded. "Everything will turn out fine, though," he said, as he gingerly intertwined his fingers within hers.
"Hopefully," she said, with a smile.
She held his hand and started wiggling his fingers within her palm. "Say you became a really famous scientist," she started, staring down at his fingers. "You wouldn't forget me, right?"
Parker thought he could hear the sound of his heart breaking, at the insecurity that was laced in her words. Though the question seemed innocent and playful, there was a note of sincerity intertwined in it.
"Do you think I can ever forget you?" Parker asked, voicing out his thoughts. "You, of all people? I could even forget my birthday, but I will never forget these days you've given me, Delilah."
"What if we go our separate ways?"
Parker bit his lip, unsurely. This was new terrain that they were treading upon.
Did this insinuate the fact that she liked him? Did this mean they were going out, or was that something you formally had to get done?
"Parker," she said, as she snapped him out of his thoughts. Her voice sounded infinitesimally small, and the look on her face could have made the world momentarily tilt off of its axis.
Parker wasn't the type to make promises about the future, but this time, he decided to make an exception.
(delilah fitch was worth all the exceptions)
"Going separate ways won't even be an option, okay?" Parker said. He scooted forward on his seat determinedly and brought their clasped hands up between their faces. "You see this?" He asked, gesturing to their intertwined hands. "This is the most special thing that has ever happened to me in my life. You're a miracle, Delilah Fitch. My miracle. And I don't think I can let you go that easily."
Delilah smiled, as the reassurance washed over her like a wave. She exhaled in relief, and removed her hand from his grip, only to later thread it through the back of his hair.
She pushed herself froward until her lips were pressed onto his cheek. She kissed him softly, and the furrows on her lips felt supple on his warm skin.
She couldn't bring herself to say anything, because she was overwhelmed with his response.
He was the reason she could wake up with a smile. He was the reason she could go to sleep with a warm feeling.
This boy, was what kept her going.
