Johan and Erica were in a HyperVan making their way to the San Francisco International Airport. The ride from their house in Cupertino Hills to SFO was a long and unentertaining one. So, of course, both were on their phones-but for different reasons.
Johan was playing Geometry Jump. He was attempting to re-beat the level Deadlocked for the 100th time. When he accomplishes this, he will have officially have cleared every RoboTop level of the game 100 times each.
Erica, on the other hand, was taking selfies while entering health information in her health app. She logged steps taken, distance walked or ran, curl ups and push ups done, resting heart rate, minutes spent exercising, exercise activities done, and diet. Did I tell you she was a jock? Did I also tell you she does many sports? Did I also tell you that she invented her own martial arts? Told you she was a jock.
Upon arrival at the airport, they both immediately hopped out of the HyperVan, grabbed their luggage, and then they ran into the airport without even thanking the driver.
They went through multiple escalators, stairwells, terminals, and security checkpoints. Once that was taken care of, they went to their gate and sat down.
Their parents, being very rich, bought them first class seats in the plane. This granted them access to the lounge and gave them priority boarding privileges. Erica wanted to go to the lounge, but Johan knew that if they went to the lounge they would lose track of time and miss the plane. So, they ended up staying in the gate. Little did they know that missing the plane would've been better... or not?
That Saturday morning, plane #40 of KoreaSky Airlines had a major problem. But, it went undetected because it was physically very small. The problem was the air lock was only partially functioning, but no one knew because on the outside, it looked perfectly fine. And, of course, it would still work so long as not too much pressure was applied on it. But, if it did, break, everyone would suffocate, and the pilot would be forced to land the plane, no matter where they were. Also, the plane had another problem. One of the jet engines was unstable. But again, it looked fine, so it went undetected.
It finally came time to board for priority boarders. Erica and Johan were first in line. They were allowed onto the plane. Erica and Johan, Erica almost a meter in front, walked down the corridor, through the designated area for priority boarding, and were admitted onto the plane. They took their seats at the front of the cabin, and then they simultaneously retrieved their phones to continue what they had been doing on the HyperVan.
After about an hour, at 10:30 AM, the plane took off. It accelerated along the runway while preparing the jet engines. The jet engines began to spin. They went faster and faster until it was impossible to tell the fixed location of one blade of the jet engine with the naked eye. The plane took off.
After all the safety precautions, Johan grabbed the food catalog from the seat pocket. He ordered an eight inch pepperoni pizza. Erica, on the other hand, was busy noting the luxuries of each individual first class cabin. It was her first time flying first class on this airline. Each first class cabin had an airplane seat, a private kitchen and bathroom, traditionally designed doors that separated each cabin, a bed, a 55" TV, mobile internet, and a living room. With cabins this large, it was a wonder that the plane had eight first class cabins. When the first class flight attendants began telling everyone in first class that it was safe to unbuckle their seatbelts and move around, Erica immediately ran to the living room of her cabin and she began a session of Tai Chi to ease her mind and help deal with the effects of the air pressure.
Johan, on the other hand, crashed onto the bed while eating pizza and playing Geometry Jump on his phone. To him, that was the life.
Four and a half hours had passed since they left SFO. Suddenly, the plane's left flank creaked. The jet engine began to fail. The flight attendants informed everyone that they would have a sea landing. People began putting on the life vests, and the flight attendants made sure everyone had buckled their seatbelts.
Erica quickly rushed to the seat. She opened the locker under the seat and then she put on the life vest, as did Johan. Johan advised her via text that they should open the cabin door for a quick escape.
However, the captain lost control of the plane engines as the other ones also began to fail due to uncontrollable speed. The plane lurched forward. By Johan's calculations, there was 50 seconds left until they would crash. At the same moment he had the thought, the power went out.
