Ryan POV
"Sebastian, I hope you're ready. If everything goes as planned, the position is yours," I explained one last time to Sebastian.
"I'll do my best. So, go see Keith. Zack and I are plenty to take care of everything for today," he answered as he shooed me away.
"We will see. I'll see you tonight. You better not come crying if anything goes wrong," I smirked as I walked out of my office.
I closed the door behind me. I sighed, I hoped everything will be alright. But, it was only for a day, well if he failed that is. Not that I wanted him to fail, but this was my responsibility. Handing it to someone else wasn't an easy thing. Not easy at all. Without realizing, I was already in our room. I was sitting in my usual chair and looked at Keith. He was so pale and so skinny. Indeed, it wasn't easy, so not easy.
"Keith, today will be the last day I'll see you. I don't know when I'll be back, but your family, Sebastian and Zack will be here to take care of you. Rest and wake up soon, okay?" I waited for him to answer, but as always, he stayed silent. "I'll miss you."
I stayed by my mate side all day. I only left his side when I needed to use the washroom and to eat. To be honest, I wanted to take him with me, but Helena talked me out of it. I knew it would have been a reckless and dangerous decision, but having him so far from me...
"I'll have to break our promise again. I really failed as a mate," I whispered to myself. I should have expected that the Prince wouldn't sit on his golden chair and wait for the war to start. I should have assigned guards to protect my mate since I knew... I knew that he was the main target. I was tired of watching everything happen from the sidelines. I'll make him regret to ever cross my path even if I had to completely exterminate his family, his friends or his Kingdom.
"That's... Not... True..." my head snapped up as I saw my mate's eyes for the first time since the attack. "Don't... cry..." he weakly said.
I gently took his hand into mine. "You can't even imagine how worried I was," I let out a sob as I silently cried into his hand. "What if I lost you that day? What would I have done?" The thought of it made me want to die.
He pulled his hand out of my grip to only put it on my cheek. He caressed it and I just let him do. I missed his touch as much as hearing his voice. I missed my angel. "I'll never leave you alone. You are stuck with me for good."
I let out a relieved chuckle and we stayed silent as I watched him breathe with his eyes closed. "Rest, I'm going to get Zack to check on you, okay?"
He gave me a small nod and I gave him a last look before heading to my office. Relax, he will not just disappear. I didn't know if he would be there or with a patient. I knocked and opened the door before heading inside. As expected, Sebastian was there and so was Zack. They seemed surprised to see me since I told them I will not come and check on them.
"Ryan, what's up?" asked Sebastian as he signed a paper.
"Keith just woke up," I answered and he stopped doing whatever he was and so did Zack. "Sebastian, you continue to work and let Zack check on him first. If everything's okay, you can go see him," I explained as my mate's best friend sat back down. I knew he wanted to protest, but I didn't want to overwhelm Keith since he just woke up.
I followed with my brother into my bedroom and stayed behind as he went to take his tools in the corner of the room. He washed his hands before going to check up on my mate. I slowly made my way to the chair and sat down.
"How are you feeling?" I asked my mate as Zack listened to his heartbeat.
"Weak... H-How," he started to cough and I stood up panicked. Zack gently rubbed his back and gave him a glass of water. My mate took a few careful sips. "How long was I asleep?" he sighed as he leaned back on the pillow.
I looked at him as I thought about how I should answer him. Will he freak out? Should I ease him into it? Will he hate me for not arriving on time? Absurd ideas passed my mind even though I knew I made no senses, I just started panicking. I didn't want to go through all of this ever again. God, I don't even recognize myself! I was never this indecisive in my whole life. I had to get a grip. My mate was injured, but now he is safe. He is by my side, he is safe. He didn't need any more stress. He just needed to recover, I will take care of the rest.
"Almost a month," I finally answered.
"And... How about the war?" hearing him ask me that made me feel so stupid for being so weak. My mate just woke up from a coma and he was already all business.
"I'm going on the front lines tomorrow," I started as he stared at me. Those beautiful eyes were looking at me. I knew what he was thinking. He wanted to come. "I'm going there alone, you stay here and rest. Sebastian will replace me when Zack gives you the go, you can go help him. Nothing reckless, okay?" My mate sighed in defeat and nodded. "I know that you're angry about what happened, but let me take care of it okay? I'll make sure the Prince regret everything he did to you."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
