Hachioji
A part if the Bushu Tama region of Ego, this is where Kondou and Hijikata are from.
Hachiro Iba [1]
The eldest son of one of the oldest, and most respected, dojos in Japan. He is a master of the Shingyoro-Ryu martial arts, and his prowess granted him prestige among warriors and officials.

He drank the Water of Life and became a Fury. Upon losing his left arm in battle, he replaced it with a Demon's arm.
Hajime Saito [1]
Captain of the 3rd Division of the Shinsengumi. He is a native of Edo. He wields his sword in his left hand and fights with incredible skill.

Left the Shinsenumi along with Kashitaro Itou to join the Guardians of the Imperial Tomb.

He left the Guard and returned to the Shinsengumi. He was operating as a spy under Hijikata's orders.

Became a Fury after drinking the Water of Life.
Hakodate
A port city in southern Ezo that was opened to other nations as result of the Convention of Kanagawa, which established trade between the United States and Bakumatsu Period Japan.
Hakuoki
A demon name meaning "demon of the fleeting blossom."
Hamaguri Gate
One of the western gates of the imperial estate, it is protected by the allied forces of Aizu, Kuwana, and Satsuma.
Hamaguri Rebellion
The incident wherein the forces of the Choshu domain fought the shogunate and the Shinsengumi near Hamaguri Gate in an effort to regain power in the government after they were expelled.
Hatamoto
High-ranking vassals of the Tokugawa clan who serve the Shogun directly.
Head-guard
A simple piece of armor to protect the head, it is a sheet of metal attached to a cloth headband.

The headquarters of the Shinsengumi. It was located in the Mibu area, and was where members lived and took their meals.

After leaving Mibu, the Shinsengumi relocated their headquaters to the Nishi Hongwanji temple.

The third Shinsengumi compound was located in the village of Fudodo.

The Shinsengumi headquarters in Edo was located beyond the Kajibashi Gate, in the mansion of former Executive Lieutenant-Minister Tanetatsu Akizuki.
Heisuke Toudou [1]
Captain of the Shinsengumi's 8th Division, he is from Edo. He is the youngest captain, and is known for being particularly energetic.

He left the Shinsengumi with Kashitaro Itou to join the Guardians of the Imperial Tomb.
Heisuke Toudou [3]
He survived the Aburano Kouji Incident by becoming fury, and rejoined the Shinsengumi. The official records showed him as deceased.
Hibachi
A container lined with heat-proof material and used to hold burning charcoal. They were used to provide heat from the Heian period through the Second World War.
Hideyoshi Toyotomi
A general during the Warring States period, his policies and initiatives had a long-lasting effect on Japanese history.
High-ranking Retainer
The higher ranking of the samurai class. In the Tosa Domain, it points mainly to the retainers of the Yamauchi Clan, who became the new governors.

Kondou, Hijikata, and Okita's home town.
Hokushin Itto [1]
A sword style that was popular in Edo during the Bakumatsu Period.
Hokushin Itto [2]
A sword style that was popular in Edo during the Bakumatsu period. Both Itou and Toudou use this fighting style.
Hougyoku Haiku Collection
A collection of poetry written by Hijikata under the pen name, "Hougyoku."

Hour of the Dog
Approximately 8pm.
House
Refers to the domain or clan that a samurai serves. Can also be used after a fashion, to refer to the specific person a samurai serves.
