Obanshi

An official group in the shogunate who is treated, and behaved, as a military force.

Ogaki Domain

Allied with the shogunate at the Battle of Tobo-Fushimi, but eventually changed sides and spearheaded the imperial attack.


Oiran

A term for a courtesans during the Edo period, specifically those in the Yoshiwara district of Edo and of high rank. The higher the rank of the orian, the more wealthy and powerful their patron had to be.


Okuzume

An organization intent on protecting the shogunate. It is comprised of talented swordsmen from shogunate and lower-ranking vassals.


Open Country Faction

People in support of having open borders in Japan for trade, travel, and assimilation.


Opposition Daimyo

A term used to refer to daimyo who only submitted to the Tokugawa Shogunate after the Battle of Sekigahara, anf as such were often kept at arm's length by the shogunate.


Opposition Domain

A domain governed by one of the Opposition daimyo.


Osaka Castle

Built by Hideyoshi Toyotomi during the Warring States period to surpass Nobunaga's Azuchi Castle. It was a stronghold of the shogunate and considered impregnable.


Otobe

A town facing the Japan Sea in southwestern Ezo.


Otose

Landlady of the Fushimi Terada Inn of which Sakamoto is a regular.


Oumiya

Ryouma Sakamoto's hiding place. It is a soy sauce shop located on the opposite side of the Tosa Domain Residence.


Owari Domain

The leader and largest of the three branches of the Tokugawa clan. The lord of this domain was higher in rank than the lords of the other two.
