Bakumatsu Period

The end of the Tokugawa shogunate. This period began eith the arrival of foreign trade, and lasted until the Meiji Restoration.

Battle of Ikeda Inn

The incident where Shinsengumi troops raided the Ikeda Inn to halt a plot to kidnap the Emperor and burn the city of Kyoto.

Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma

As the Kouyou Regulatory Company, the Shinsengumi attempted to defend Koufu Castle during this engagement, but were defeated by the Imperial Army.

Battle of Sekigahara

The battle in which the Eastern Army, led by Ieyasu Tokugawa, defeated the Western Army, led by Mitsunari Ishida. The ultimate result of this batte was the rise in the Tokugawa shogunate.

Battle of Toba-Fushimi

A battle between imperial and shogunate forces that lasted four days during January of 1868. Skirmishes occured in Kami Toga, Shimo Toba, Takeda, and Fushimi in southern Kyoto.

Benten Fortress

A marine fortress guarding Hakodate in the Republic of Ezo. It was built during the late Tokugawa period.

Bizen Osafune Kanemitsu

An old sword made between the late Kamakura period to mid-Nanbokucho period (roughly 1300-1350) in the Bizen Province. Many legends have formed about it and its uncanny sharpness.
