An area in which many geisha houses, brothels, and restaurants are located.
Republic of Ezo
An entity established by former vassals of Tokugawa. It was intended to be a refuge for the remnants of the Tokugawa clan and a stronghold of samurai tradition, not an independent state.
Restoration of Imperial Rule
The political event in which the shoun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa returned all sovereign powers to the Meiji Emperor.
Risaburo Nomura
Chief's Page. A warrior that joined the Shinsengumi at the same time as Souma.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
A novel describing the turblent period of Chinese history that began in the lasy Han Dynasty and lasted for nearly a hundred years, known as the "Three Kingdoms" era. Inexplicably popular in Japan.
Ronin
Samurai who have left their master, or who have been stripped of their privileges. Can also be used to refer to a samurai who does not have a master to serve.
Roshigumi
The original name used by the group that would eventually become the "Shinsengumi."
Rules of Conduct
Shinsengumi regulations that were to be strictly obeyed, as the penalty for disobedience was honorable suicide. Also refered to as "The Code."

A bridge over the Sumida River.
Ryojun Matsumoto
A respected doctor who works for the Tokugawa shogunate.
Ryoma Sakamoto [1]
A ronin from Tosa who negotiated the alliance between Satsuma and Choshu for the purpose of overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate. He played a crucial part in restoring imperial rule.
Ryoma Sakamoto [2]
A lordless ronin from Tosa. After heading the Navy Training Location, he established the Kameyama Company in Nagasaki. He also serves as the Head of the Kaientai )Maritime Support).
Ryoma Sakamoto [3]
Survived an assassination attempt on his life by drinking the Water of Life.
Ryunosuke Ibuki [1]
The artist of Souma's drawing.
Ryunosuke Ibuki [2]
A boy who formerly resided in the headquarters of the Roshigumi, who were the predecessors to the Shinsengumi.
Ryu'un Temple
A temple located atop a mountain to the northeast of the Fushimi magistrate's office.
