Wakizashi
Too short to be a full sword, but too long to be considered a dagger, the wakizashi was also known as a "companion sword." It was generally worn paired with a longer blade.
Water of Life
A substance imported from the West that turns those who take it into furies. Until it was refined by Kodo Yukimura, it was too toxic to use.
Western Learning
These pertain to the influx of texts arriving to Japan through the gradual dissemination of printing press materials, primarily from the Netherlands.
Wolves of Mibu
A nickname given to the men who would later become the Shinsengumi. It was both a reference to their repuation and an alternate spelling of their original name, Miburo, which means "ronin of Mibu."
