Iai

A martial art technique where one strikes and finishes off their opponent in one smooth motion from the starting position of the sword inside its sheath. It's focus is the quick draw.


Iba

A dojo run by the Iba family, who are teachers of the Shingyoto-ryu swordsmanship. It is also known as Renbukan.

Hachiro's nickname at Iba Dojo.

Where the remnants of the shogunate army regrouped after escaping from Edo.

A command position that presides over an infantry force.

A warship plated with iron down to the waterline.


Isami Kondou

One of the founders of the Shinsengumi, an organization created to help keep the peace in Kyoto. He is originally from Edo.


Ishida Medicinal Powder

A powdered medicine that was manufactured and sold by the family of Toshizo Hijikata. It claimed to have a positive effect on bonesettings, bruises, muscular pains, and minor cuts.

This phrase was the central chanted component of a spate of festivals that spread across Japan near the end of the Tokugawa era.


Itabashi

The location of the headquarters of the imperial forces during their campaign in northeastern Japan.


Izo Okada

A country samurai from the Tosa Domain. He joined the Tosa Imperialist party and assassinated many people under Takechi's orders.


Izuminokami Kanesada

The favoured sword of Toshizo Hijikata, it was the work of an 11th generation Kanesada swordsmith.
