Saburo Miki [1]

Captain of the Shinsengumi's 9th Division. He is Kashitaro Itou's younger brother. They joined the Shinsengumi together.

Saburo Miki [2]

He left the Shinsengumi with his older brother, Kashitaro Itou, and became a warrior for the Guardians of the Imperial Tomb.

Saburo Miki [3]

After the disbandment of the Guard, he joined the Satsuma troops to participate in the Toba-Fushimi battle.

Saga Domain

A non-Tokugawa Domain located in Saga of the Hizen Province, headed by the Nabeshima Clan. It is also known as Hizen Domain or Nabeshima Domain.

Sanjo Ohashi

A bridge over the Kamo river at Sanjo Street in Kyoto. It is the last stop on the Tokaido and Nakasendo roads, two of the Five Routes of Edo.

Sanosuke Harada

Captain of the Shinsengumi's 10th Division, and a native of Edo. He is very skilled with the spear, which is his weapon of choice. There is a scar on his stomach from an attempt at honorable suicide.

Satsumata

Arms used to arrest and restrain your intended target. The grip is long, and the tip is spilt into two.

Satsuma Domain

A domain governed by an Opposition daimyo named Shimazu. Initially, they supported Imperial Unification, but eventually allied with the Choshu Domain and other like-minded men in the interest of removing the shogunate.

Seihei Corps

A squad about 100 men compromised of those who left their domain, some hatamoto, and infantary from the shogunate. It was led by Gidou Haga.

Seinosuke Ishikawa

Shintaro Nakaoka's alias.

Seishisai Aizawa

A scholar and thinker of the Mitogaku, Fujita faction, who acted as the Feudal retainer of Mito. He published a summary of Imperial Nationalist theory called "Shinron," meaning "New Thesis."

Sen

A young woman who was rescued from beligerent ronin in Kyoto by the heroine. Also known as Osen.

Sendai Domain

A large and influential domain in the northeast, governed by Yoshikuni Date, an Opposition daimyo. Leader of the Northern Alliance.

Seven Herb Porridge

Rice porridge containing seven berbs of spring: Japanese parsley, Shepard's purse, Jersey cudweed, chickweed, kooni tabirako, turnip, and daikon radish.

Shiei Hall

A dojo in Edo that taught the Tennen Rishin style. Its owner was Isami Kondou, a 4th generation head. Many Shinsengumi members studied or lived there.

Shikoku Inn

One over serveral locations where national imperialists gathered.

Shimabara

The district in Kyoto where one could find licensed courtesans. Also called the "red light" district.
