"Hey girl hey!" I walked up to a perky Melanie with a genuine smile on my face. She somehow always manages to make me genuinely happy.
"Hey Mel hey! What's up?" She smiled sadly at me and I already knew where this conversation was about to go.
"I think the proper question is, how are you?" She whispered so know one else would hear.
"Oh right! How are you, Melanie?" I questioned with fake enthusiasm, failing attempts to avoid answering the question.
"No silly! I meant how are you? Did you have a good night last night?" I could already see the concern surfacing on her face.
"Well if by good night you mean, 'I took a beating without going unconscious', then yeah, I had a great night." I said completely monotone. She looked down and sniffled, and I felt bad for my choice of words. "Mel, it's okay."
"No, it's not okay! I feel like I should be doing more to help you!" I looked at her, taken back.
"Melanie! You already do so much for me! You bring me food and you sneak in my window all the time to help me!" She sighed and shrugged her shoulders.
"I guess," she said quietly, but I could tell she was still beating herself up. "Well, here, I brought you breakfast." She held up a big bag of McDonald's and my eyes widened.
"Wow, thanks! But you didn't have to. A banana would've been fine."
"Yeah, but I wanted to do something special for you today." She shrugged.
"Well, thank you. This means a lot." I said while grabbing the bag from her hands, mouth already watering.
While I ate, she told me about what I missed in the first class, and as she was handing me my assignment for it, we heard a loud shout.
"Hey guys!"
We both looked over to see an out of breath Brooke running towards us. Brooke wasn't someone we considered a friend of ours, nor did she see herself as our friend, but she was that nice girl in school that talked to everybody on occasion. Me and Melanie both greeted her in unison.
"Guess WHAT!" She shrieked.
"What?!" Mel and I again spoke in unison, curious as to what Brooke had to tell us.
"There's a totally cute new kid coming next week!" She said while jumping excitedly. Melanie soon joined in on her excitement, while I just stared at them with no emotion.
"Great, another new popular guy to make my life a living horror story." They both stopped jumping and frowned at me.
"Oh, Annabelle Skyhill," She scolded using my whole name, "don't be a downer! You haven't even meet the guy yet." Jade said with a hint of a playful smile. "Who knows, he might be really nice."
With her gossip being shared, she skipped away, not fully knowing the extent of my lack of excitement.
"She's right, you know. He could be nice."
"Yeah, whatever, let's just go to class." I turned and slumped my shoulders as I stalked off to class.

"YES! And then she-"
"Mel! I know. We saw the movie together." I laughed while cutting her off.
