Chapter 4

The week went by slowly and painfully. The only excitement I had all week was Melanie trying to cheer me up by making silly fake scenarios of the new guys life, and what he might look like. Some of her stories were actually quite funny, and made me laugh. But behind that, I was dreading him coming. I just had a weird feeling about it that I couldn't shake, and from past experience, my feelings usually weren't wrong.

I saw my crazy friend running to me with an excited look on her face. Before she opened her mouth, I already knew what was coming.

"New guy today!" Mel shrieked, causing me to roll my eyes and laugh at the confirmation of my suspicions. "Annabelle, isn't that so exciting!"

I just looked at the floor and didn't respond, causing her to audibly sigh. Even though she was trying to get me excited and cheer me up, she knew I was afraid.

I felt a hand on my shoulder and looked up to meet Mel's blue eyes. "It's gonna be alright, Annabean. We'll just see what he looks like, and then ignore him. We won't associate with him if you don't want to. But just think positive. Maybe he'll be really nice and we'll have another friend." She gave me a reassuring smile, and I'll admit, it made me feel a little better to hear her optimism.

I was about to say something to reassure her that I was fine, but I was interrupted by many squeals and giggles. Girls started swarming around, and jumping excitedly to try and get a glimpse of whatever it was they were looking at.

"I think he's here!" Brooke squeaked, nearly running past us to join the crowd before Melanie grabbed her arm to pull her back. "I'm so excited! I heard he's really cute!" She was jumping up and down as well.

"Let's wait for him to walk by so we can get a good glimpse. With all those girls, we won't see anything." Mel suggested.

I just crossed my arms and stood there, completely unfazed by the whole fiasco over one new student. But it wasn't until I heard the eerily familiar voice that I became interested.

"Ladies, ladies, please. There's enough of me to go around." That caused an eruption of more squeals and giggles.

That voice though. I know it. I know I do. It's lower and deeper, but there's a familiar feeling I get from it. I just can't place it.

The voice laughed.

Now that laugh, I can pick that out anywhere. But it can't be. There's no way.

Before my mind could start to spin with questions and suspicions, the crowd started to part.

It seemed as if time slowed down.

I saw the familiar blonde hair. I remembered when I went with him to get it dyed. He was nervous and didn't know if he'd keep it. It turns out he did in fact keep it, and it looked perfect. His face looked the same, but older. His smile was the same, just more straight, but still perfect. His black skinny jeans and jean vest looked good on him. Definitely an upgrade from the little boy clothes he wore. He looked the exact same yet completely different.

I completely tuned the rest of the world out. All the squeals silenced in my ears. My eyes filled with tears. Happy tears for once. I felt such warmth spreading through me. I couldn't believe it. After years of missing him and wanting him back, he was here.

My mind was trying to process what was happening when my feet started to move me forward. I was stopped, and looked to find what it was that blocked me. It was then that I remembered that Melanie and Brooke, along with a bunch of girls, were still here.

"Where are you going? And why are you smiling so big? Not that I don't love that."

"Mellie, that's him! That's Niall!" I'm pretty sure I was beaming brighter than the sun right now. She gasped in shock, and let go of my arm.

I started to run.

I forgot about all the pain, the hurt, and the loneliness I've felt without him over the years. He was walking down the hall with his back to me, and before I could stop myself, I shouted his name.

"NIALL!"

He instinctively turned around to see who called to him. Just as he turned around, I flung myself into his arms and grabbed onto him for dear life. But just as soon as the happiness came...it vanished.

"What the hell?! Get off me!"

He shoved me off with such force, that I ended up on the ground. I was shocked, and a little hurt at first, but I figured it was just a reflex from the shock of having a person thrown at him. I looked up into his eyes and waited for the flash of recognition in his eyes, and the smile that he'd beam before throwing his arms back around me.

But that never came though.

Instead, he looked at me like I was completely crazy.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?"

My smile dropped and I quickly scrambled off the ground. The hallways silenced as everyone was shocked and watching the encounter.

"W-what?" I was so confused. I was about to open my mouth again when Nick, Logan, and Connor came up with a few of the other jocks trailing behind.

"Hey man." Logan said while patting Niall on the back.

Niall turned his attention away from me, "Hey guys."

Realization hit me like a bullet.

No. No no no no no no NO!

He can't be friends with them! NO!

Nick looked at me in disgust. "What are you doing with Skankhill?" He sneered in a mocking manner.

Niall didn't even look at me. He just brushed off my presence and shrugged. "Nothing, she just came onto me like a psycho." My heart split. What the hell is going on?

"Her?!" Logan questioned with a shocked tone. "Ha! Yeah right!" Him and all his stupid friends laughed. "Every guy in this school wants to bang this bitch, but little virgin girl is a worthless waste of time."

This caused more laughter, and usually his words would hurt, but they didn't hurt anywhere near as bad as Niall's next words.

Niall finally looked at me. But it wasn't me he looked at. His eyes racked over my body in such a dirty, disgusting way, that I almost wondered if this was really my Niall, or if I was mistaken.

He finally looked into my eyes. With the the most menacing smirk on his lips, he opened his mouth.

"Yeah...She does look pretty bang-able."

That shattered my heart, and hurt more than any hit, any word, or any name I've been called. It broke me more than I already was.

His eyes scanned over me one last time before he laughed and walked away with all the guys, leaving me shattered, confused, and absolutely broken.
