Chapter 61

Niall...

Another dreadful week had gone by. The little day calendar on the wall taunted me, telling me so.

July 10th

It'd been nearly three weeks. The pain stabbing my heart hadn't lessened one bit. It'd only been getting stronger and stronger, and the nightmares kept getting worse and worse. It hurt so bad, and I just wanted it to stop. I just wanted her to wake up. I needed her to wake up.

"Come on, Annabelle. Please..." I stared at her closed eyes as I rubbed the back of her fragile hand with my thumb. Another tear cascaded down my cheek, and landed on her chest.

After that night I first went home, I refused to leave again. They all tried, but there was nothing that would make me leave. I wasn't leaving this place until she did. And I hoped to God she left the same way as I did.

"Hi." I turned around to meet the cold blue eyes of Melanie. I simply nodded in response. "Still nothing?"

"Not a thing." I answered in a monotone as I faced back towards the bed.

She had been a little hostile towards me since the incident. I could perfectly see why, seeing as I so willingly placed her best friend, practically sister, into the hands of the devil. I don't think she completely hated me, but she definitely wasn't my biggest fan at the time.

Well same, Niall, because I'm not either.

Shut up.

I was sick of my head becoming a different person, and completely tearing me apart inside. They're not lying when they say 'you are your greatest enemy.'

"Her birthday is coming up in a couple days." She squeaked. "She'll finally be 19."

I didn't even look at her as she spoke. I couldn't. "Yeah." I mumbled back.

"You remember your promise?" She asked.

I was surprised she knew about that, but then again, I'm sure Annabelle confided everything in her. Considering she knew her deepest most evil secret.

"I was thinking last night, and I thought we could make like a box and put some of our stuff in it."

"Like a time-capsule?"

"Yes! Exactly! Then we can bury it at that lake in the woods! And then on your nineteenth birthday we can come back and open it."

"That's a great idea, Niall! But what if you don't remember?" I frowned and gently held her cheeks in my hand.

"I won't forget, Annabelle. I promise that as soon as I am eighteen, I'll come back here. And that spot in the woods is now our place. Ours and only ours. Whenever you miss me, just go to that spot and smile at every memory. You promise to do that and I promise I won't forget."

"Pinky Promise?"

"I pinky promise."

"Of course I remember." I mumbled, offended she would think otherwise.

"Well you sure forgot about a lot of other things and promises." She bitterly scoffed.

I let out a small whimper at her words. I knew she was referring to all my promises of protecting her and never letting her get hurt and such.

"I'm sorry." She sighed. "I didn't mean that."

"Yes you did." I retorted.

She stayed quiet after that before she spoke again five minutes later.

"Are you going to go back?" She quietly asked.

"I promised. Didn't I?" I answered. That promise was the only thing I'd leave this hospital for. "On July twenty second, when she turns nineteen, just like I promised, I'll be in those woods."My eyes started to slowly well with tears. "'I'm going to go either way, but I really wish she'd wake up and come with me."

"We'll all keep her company will you go." She said.

"Thanks." There was another small pause.

"I'm sorry." The word were so airy, and so quiet, that I barely even heard them. And I didn't even realize that it had come from my mouth.

"For what?"

I ran my free hand gently over Annabelle's bruised cheek. "I'm sorry I ruined your best friend."

The sound of her sighing caused me to pull my gaze away from Annabelle's lids. "Niall...you didn't ruin her."

"But I did."

"No. You may have hurt her at first, but you fixed her without even realizing. She's been so happy these past few months." She had the ghost of a smile on her face. "I've never seen her so happy and carefree. Thank you for that." She paused and a frown slowly slipped back on. "And as for this incident, it was a pure mistake. You didn't know. But I do know, that when she wakes up, you'll be the one to fix her again."

I let her words sink in for a moment. "Do you hate me?" I asked in a small child-like voice.

She sighed again for the tenth time. "No. I'm just upset and looking for someone to pin the blame on. I just have to make myself understand that you didn't know and intentionally do this." She started to cry. "I don't hate you, Niall. I just hate that you're part of the reason why she's here, even if it was an accident."

Her words hurt. Bad. I started to cry harder than she was.

"Wait, no. Niall, I didn't mean that!"

"Don't lie! It's fucking true! It's all my fault!" I sobbed into my hands.

I heard her get up and start to walk towards me. "Niall, It's not your-"

"Shut up! I'm a monster! I'm a fucking monster!"

I continued to sob violently, and thrashed when she tried to touch my shoulder. "I-I'm sorry..." She said in a stunned voice as I heard her speed out of the room.

You're a fucking monster, Niall. You ruined everything. You might as well have put your hands on her yourself.

Whether she intentionally meant it or not, she was right. I'm the reason why she was here. Why she was hurt, why she might die.

It was all my fault.
