^Fun fact: This song inspired the very first Next Generation
"LEI!"
I scream his name through the clouded street as the dust settles in the haze of the setting sky.
"LEI!"
I try again, running through, listening for just the slightest hint of his voice while coughing on the white dust of the crumbled rubble. The street was flooded with screams and turmoil as I make my way to the burning building lying on its side.
But a sudden explosion from my right sends me flying sideways, skidding onto the street and into the rubble as the earth vibrates beneath me with the roar of planes flying from overhead.
"Fucking A,"
I groan as I sit up a tiny cry grabs my attention and I look around. The screaming had died down with most people either dead or as far away from the rubble as possible.
I hear the cry again and wipe my eyes, burning from the dust.
"Shit," I reach down and grab hold of my watch, pressing the small hidden button in the upper right corner. A soft tingling sensation hums against my skin as the embedded chip in my wrist starts to morph into my skin into my suit before finally shielding my face with the beloved mask of Next Generation.
I take in a deep breath of clean air before continuing my quest for Lei, walking on rubble until I hear a piercing scream and look down to find its source. But all I can see is an arm sticking out from beneath a piece of drywall.
I reach down and start to uncover the child-sized arm, before the face of a small girl appears. She looks at me and screams with tiny tears running down her face.
"Hey, shhh I'm here to help." I coo gently as I take the wired frame off her opposite arm. Looking down at her legs, I take off a piece of rubble to find them bent and twisted at angles legs should never be twisted in. Her screams die down and I look into the little girl's fading eyes.
"No no no, stay with me kiddo." I coax her back to life as she writhes with pain when I pick up her small body in my arms before she settles down and clings to my suit. I look back at the burning inferno that had turned into the building.
One more time Fin,
and if not,he's probably dead.
"LEI!"
I call out and my voice echoes into the crackling flames.
"FINLEY!"
I breathe a sigh of relief once I realize he wasn't in the building being burned to a crisp but somewhere under the rubble next to me.
"LEI!" I call out again in a game of Marco Polo, the little girl rest her head on my shoulder.
"Finley!" The voice is weaker but it's coming from my left. I trip on pieces of rubble crumbling beneath me but catch myself at the last minute just in time.
"Fin..."
My name is groaned underneath me and I look down to see Lei, pinned down by bricks and steel.
"Hey, I'm going to help my friend, okay? So I'm going to have to put you down," I tell the little girl and she nods as I rest her carefully on an even piece of the brick wall before helping this idiot. I don't even know why I ran back to save this cheating prick, stupid NG training caused me to do shit like this without thinking twice.
"Fin, I was running after you..." he groans as I start to unbury him. The heat from the flames was getting closer.
"I wanted to..." I stop and looks at him.
"Do me a favor and shut the fuck up or I'm leaving you here," I warn. The weak excuses stop and he moans in pain. A loud screech stops me as I turn around to see the side of the building was collapsing
It was about to squash us all.
There was nothing I could do. I wince, holding my hands above my head in a weak attempt to stop it.
Accepting my sudden death.
But death doesn't strike as quickly as I thought and I look up to see the wall of fire that was falling towards us had been suspended in midair.
"It took you long enough!"
I yell at the short man in Next Generation uniform with his Saber symbol glowing a bright orange like the fire above us. His outstretched palms forcing the wall to stay in place with an invisible gift he was born with, passed down from our mutant grandmother and half human grandfather.
Ooo so what? he can make things float with a single thought and stop a speeding bullet without using up his lifespan in the process. I can still shoot flames out of my hands which in my opinion is far better on the power scale.
"Saving you once again I see," Mari snorts and I yank Lei out of the rubble, doing a quick once over to make sure he wasn't bleeding externally.
"Shit,"
It looks like a sharp piece of rubble had stabbed through his leg.
"I can walk," The great Leitus mutters as he makes a pathetic attempt to stand, only to pass out instead.
"Great, just fucking great. Nice to know I was dating an idiot." I sigh as I easily lift him up and over my shoulder like a rag doll, flashbacks from my training start to invade my mind but I cast them aside to focus on the task at hand. Grabbing the innocent little girl with my free hand and holding her on my hip.
Carrying both of them out of the way before Mari drops the wall.
He reaches out to take the girl when another bomb heaves us sideways.
