(Jamie POV)
"Ahhh!"
I scream out as Fin pins my arm behind me and slams my face into the mud of the freezing cold secluded corner of Regent's Park.
Fin pulls back, but as he does I whip around and attempt to punch him in the chest, sadly he catches my fist mid-air.
Like always.
"You're technique is still sloppy but the strength of your punch is increasing with practice," he says as he tosses my fist down and laughs. I wipe the sweat from my brow with a clean t-shirt only to find that a clean shower was the only thing that could help me now.
"Do I have what it takes to become Next Generation?" I ask and he burst out laughing.
"Okay maybe not, but I don't have your training alright!" I try to make up for it but Finley laughs so hard he has to wipe the tears from his eyes.
"Boy, you are far from ready. Have you even told Mari yet?" He asks as he gets his shit together for another round.
"No, he doesn't have to know. I just... I don't want to be completely helpless if anything happens you know." I explain and he nods. Fin had been training me like this since we got back from Bridgeport.
"Yeah, you know usually you do this after you become a Grayson. My family has this protocol where someone other than your spouse trains you in self-defense because one time before I was born. All the Grayson spouses and children were kidnapped by some guy who has it out for the family. My grandfather and uncle killed him but since then the spouses all formed their own fight club and just made it a thing. Even though it's been a short time, you've been through so much shit with us, you might as well be a spouse." He explains while I adjust my gloves, remembering my promise at the mention of my boyfriend who was currently in bed with our 'baby'.
"How long did you guys train to do this anyway?" I ask as he throws the first punch and I dodge.
"Since we were five years old. What's five in Alohowa?" He asks and I throw the next hit, landing it on his chest and he pushes back with a small smirk.
"Elima, But it doesn't look like Bridgeport has that much crime," I mention as he throws another one and I jump, to avoid it while trying to land a kick but he catches my leg and with a tug, I'm back in the mud.
"No, but most days it wasn't people we were fighting. Sounds weird but there's this research lab in the corner of the island called Kircat and there are these human-looking robots called humanoids which are controlled that evil guy I mentioned earlier, Some take over the world type shit but we usually stop them before it's too late. However from what I've heard, they've been awfully quiet in recent years," He says and he reaches down and lets out a hand, I take it and he pulls me up.
"Interesting," I take off my gloves and wipe the mud from my eyes.
"You know you've been surprisingly calm about all of this." Fin takes off his gloves and grabs his jacket from the bench. Looking at my phone to see Mari had texted me, asking where I was. I quickly tell him I'm just out for a jog before looking back at Fin.
"I love Marius with everything I have and to be honest I was scared after I first found out. But with his papa... I kind of tossed it to the side and just accepted it without much of a second thought," I take a sip of water and sit on the bench. He plops down next to me and lets out a deep sigh.
"Don't tell Mari, but I think I might have been the last person to talk to Joseph," I confess and Finley chokes on his water, spitting it out on the grass while coughing in shock.
"What? W-what did he say?" Fin asks and I look out to the park where people were walking their dogs and children were running across the park to get to school in their uniforms.
"About a week before he died, while we were in France. I got a phone call from an unknown number. Thought it was weird so I answered it and it was Joseph. We had a very long conversation and he was nice. It was almost like it wasn't weird at all that I was talking to my boyfriend's father. Then he asked me about Mari. He told me that Mari and I reminded him of Peter and himself and asked me to take care of him... and for some reason... I don't know why but I felt like he wanted to make sure Mari would be taken care of for life. I promised him I would take care of him for the rest of my life no matter what happens. That was pretty much it," It felt good to get it off my chest to at least one person and Finley looks down at the ground.
"Joseph and Peter were incredible uncles and fathers," He says and sniffles a bit before getting up and starting the walk back.
"Hey, wait up!"
