CHAPTER EIGHT

My lips raised on both ends as I stood at the door with the box of stuff that I carried back from the office. I would have spent my afternoon talking to Melissa but a call from Louis have interrupted it. Officially from today onwards, I am no longer employed – "An accountant who spent all her life pursuing her career and yet handed all out to marry the wealthiest man in town." I let out a sigh.

It should be quite a bliss for such a twist, isn't it? Yet, I wasn't feeling any happier thinking about that. My eyes watched the deafening silence surrounding the house. The house was still as usual empty. Even Jayden lived here, he was hardly seen around. My eyes conveniently noticed the space beside the shoe rack and held down the box beside. Like a habit, I took the remote control and started playing some music for background noise.

"Let see" I walked over to the fridge, opening it and took a look at what kind of ingredients I could use to scoop for a simple dinner tonight. There were some eggs. I knelt down, pulling the bottom drawer of the fridge and found a good amount of vegetables. Who would have filled up the fridge with all these ingredients? It couldn't be Jayden, he doesn't eat at home.

Then, my phone at the living room alerted me. Without hesitation, I walked over to answer the call, "Jayden?"

"Good evening Mrs. Solevan-to-be, your fiancé will be back in an hour's time. Can you prepare some dinner for him? Thank you very much." Then the call ended.

I frowned. Did he just ask me to make his dinner?

I returned my glance at the suspicious overwhelming ingredients in the fridge. Was it really his doing?

Nevertheless, it would be a great distraction to whip up some dishes to keep me occupied. I still do feel affected being unemployed. I couldn't imagine I was going to live those days waking up not knowing what I am going to do. Even I wasn't working for somebody back then when I was married to Jayden, I still occupied myself managing brands and that probably could be the reason why it had kept me sane during that soulless ten years marriage.

After digging all the stuff from the fridge and cooking it, the food was finally ready. I placed all the dishes on the table. My eyes looked up at the clock. Jayden should be back now any minute.

Will he be back on time? Should I do something about keeping the food warm? Maybe pouring it back into the pot and wait till he come back then serve again?

I paused at my own thoughts. My eyes wandered at the dishes on the table. I looked down at the apron that I was wearing. I smirked, "So this is how it feels like being a wife"

As I finished whipping the dishes like an obedient unemployed housewife, my phone hanging in my apron's pocket vibrated. Without any hesitation, I wiped clean my hands with a nearby clean towel and answered the call. It was Melissa.

"Annie, are you still outside?"

I shook my head, "I have returned home." And made a few dishes waiting for Jayden to return for dinner.

"I just want you to know, I will always be here if you need a listening ear."

I walked to the sofa, eyeing at the clock. Jayden would be back soon. "Mel, there is something I want to discuss with you maybe face to face. But don't worry, it's just a small matter."

She responded on instance, "If there is anything I am of a help, you can count on me! How about we meet up tomorrow for lunch during your lunch time."

"Mel, I..." I almost forgot that she didn't know I got fired. My eyes lowered as I took the remote control playing in my hands. "Okay we will meet up for lunch and talk about it"

Then, the door was heard opened. Jayden walked in with his briefcase, "What is that you need to talk about with my half-sister?"

"Jayden..." I stood up, feeling awkward.

Melissa seemed to have heard Jayden voice as she decided to end the call, "Annie, I will see you tomorrow."

He put down his briefcase, adjusted loosely the tie as he turned to me curiously, "What kind of important matter you need to meet my dearest half-sister to talk about?"

"You are being sarcastic" I rolled my eyes as I walked past him to head back to the kitchen.

Jayden held on my arm, gazed at me. "I can't stop being curious of my wife's matter"

I held his gaze. My heart warmed. Uncontrollably, my lips raised a little. I bit my lips, feeling my cheek blushing as Jayden was still standing at the door staring at me. I coughed, "You should get change and... come down have dinner."

He laughed before walking upstairs to the bedroom.

Shortly after Jayden came down, we sat down at the dining table for dinner. The dinner started with a string of silence. We were just busy munching off the food from our plate and staring in different spaces as we sat opposite. Jayden inhaled a deep breath before he looked up at me. I got startled by his actions. My eyes were staring back, lips parted but silence were still in place.

He coughed, "The fried broccoli...is very nice."

I nodded, "T-Thank you." Oh my god, why am I thanking him for the compliment?

"This is so awkward"

I frowned, "Yeah..."

Jayden looked at the dishes on the plate as he filled his face with a slight grin, "It had been a very long time I had home cooked food."

My eyes turned to him in curiosity. He caught it and continued, "Ever since Mom passed away, I never had meals at home."

"You still have Mel."

Jayden smirked, "We only share the same father."

I frowned, "Jayden"

He chuckled, as he scooped some fried broccoli and put it in my plate.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure"

I asked, "Did you... fill up the fridge with all those ingredients?"

Jayden choked on his food as he got shocked at my question. I grabbed a cup of water quickly and passed it to him. "Have some" He took over the cup and quickly drank it. After a few seconds, Jayden seemed to be more settled down from the food choke.

"Fall... said to do that"

"What?"

"She said..." Jayden inhaled deeply, "a husband goes home and eat dinner with his wife"

Our eyes met. Silence filled us. Then I chuckled, and Jayden smiled as well.
