CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR
I sat along the hospital corridor as my eyes stared blankly into spaces. And just as things cannot get any worst, I was put in a difficult situation again. Today was also the day that the directors will vote for the person that they want to appoint as the CEO of Solevan Holdings. Jayden had told me to attend but seeing me sitting in silence and not compromising an inch, he had decided not to probe further.
Shortly after he had informed that he will be returned home to get dress, Fall had come to persuade me to attending the voting session.
She let out a sigh, "You knew this was never going to be a one-time off from whoever is that is putting your mother in danger."
My eyes widened at her comments. I smirked, "So you think this will change my mind? Do you know what you are even saying? This is my mother and I had just single-handedly put her in danger!"
"Look" Fall paused before she continued, "If you give another thought again to your current action. This is what really putting your mother in potential danger in the future."
I sat back, dumbfounded at her words.
Fall added, "Annie, they are already onto your mother. She is never going to be out of their radar." She is not wrong.
"How much leverage is your mother on you will depends on how you act from this moment onward." She breathed in deeply, "If you choose to be absent from the voting today, that is you telling them that in future when you are in their way again, she is going to be the leverage against you."
I let out a sigh, unable to apprehend what was told.
"Jayden is trying to keep your mother safe by asking you to attend."
Eyes narrowed as I uttered, "I have to be a heartless daughter to keep her safe?"
She nodded without hesitation. "Filial piety is a gesture from heart, not actions. It doesn't matter how people perceive of your love for her but how much you are willing to do to keep her safe."
After Fall had left to prepare for voting session that was happening in the afternoon, I finally entered the room to check out on Mom. Just minutes later, she had opened her eyes again. She noticed my presence and gestured me to come closer.
I asked with a heavy heart, "How are you feeling?"
Mom did a slight nod, "I am old already, it would take a while to recover. But other than that, I am fine."
I gulped, as tears dwelled at the edge of my eyes. "Mom, I am sorry. This is all my fault."
"Don't give other's evildoing an excuse." She inhaled as her eyes watched me with clarity. She knew. Mom continued, "It was never your fault."
"If only..."
She hushed me and continued, "Annie, I am never as proud as I am right now for being your mother. You done me proud and you had never been better than you were before. Not the little girl that hide in my hugs, but the amazing woman that stood beside her man. Don't let this change you."
I leaned forward, holding her grip and sat quietly beside her. The silence wrapped us as I embraced the peacefulness in the hospital room.
--
Eyes held high as I gazed back in the mirror. I was back home shortly after and was getting ready for the voting session. Jayden was noticed from the reflection. Turning around, I met his smile. He walked over as his hand reached for mine. "I am glad you made up your mind."
