CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
I moved my mouse, scrolling through the tabs on my explorer page. Ever since I managed to confirm a few job interviews, I had been working on the comparison of the flight fares. Now that I was spending on my own money, I would need to allocate my limited resources wisely. The interview dates has set. So now I just needed to secure a flight and the accommodation before I was ready to pack up and go. The mere thoughts of the possible adventures awaiting excites me. Yet, the subtle void in my heart reminded me. I let out a soft sigh. I miss him.
Just then a knock was heard.
"Come in"
Melissa walked in as she looked at me. Her face filled with worries as she walked to my side.
"What?"
"You have a guest..." Jayden? I startled. My hands shivered, feeling the nervousness yet accompanied with an indescribably relief. It was as if the only treatment to the void in my heart was for me to see him again.
Melissa added, "Fall is here."
Like expectation will sometimes led to disappointment. I could instantly feel the hope that lit up had diminished on instant as disappointment hit the fence. Jayden didn't come. My heart sank as I acknowledged the dreaded fact. But why did she come instead? Was it Jayden's idea to send her here and discuss about the press conference? It would make sense that she is here to discuss about the press conference. A slight aching rang in my heart as I imagined. Yet again, another one that will declare of our split. Maybe I had overestimated my importance. After all, I was only just a chess piece for his ambitious plan.
I did a slight nod as I followed Melissa down to the living hall where Fall was waiting. She was still looking the same. The woman that I knew who always carried herself well. But yet, I could noticed a slight tiresome worn across her shoulder. I wondered why. She had been a friend that I had trusted. And if not for the investigation on Anna, I wouldn't have seen her in a different light.
Fall still held her usual smile, "Annie. It's been awhile"
"Me too"
There was an awkward silence between us as Melissa noticed, "I am going to head out and visit my mother. Annie, I will come back and eat dinner with you"
"Okay."
Then she left with a servant. The other servants in the living hall had withdrawn themselves as well. Leaving now just me and Fall alone. I sat beside as we took a few moments settling in silence.
Fall then started the conversation, "How... have you been?"
"I am good"
She nodded, smiled as she replied, "That's... good."
I looked up to her as I questioned, "Fall, why are you here?"
"I..." Fall uttered, "I am here for..."
I smirked, "So he had made up his mind. When do you want to set up the press conference? Made it as soon as possible. I do not have much time left here."
She looked at me confused, "Made up his mind? What press conference?"
"I thought you are here for the press conference." She doesn't know? Impossible.
Fall let out a sigh, "I am here because I am worried about Jayden."
"Why do you have to worry about him?" I smirked, "He have said it very clear what he wants."
"Annie... Jayden is -"
I held out my hand, "Never mind. I don't want to know about his stuff anymore. From now on, what happen to him has got nothing to do with me. Fall, I think you have wasted your trip coming here. I still have some stuff to attend so you might want to get going already."
She widened her eyes in disbelief, "Do you... really have to be so heartless?"
"Heartless?" I stared back at her accusation, "Who is the one that is heartless? You or Me?"
Her lips parted but sealed tight again. She sat froze, unable to react.
I continued, "Who told me that there was nothing found about Anna? Who was the one that disguised the truth when I asked about the past of Jayden and Anna? Was it an abnormal way or you could have simply said that it was a contract? Was it that difficult for you to explain, our capable PR Manager?"
She was shock. The rage in me continued to build up as she silently acknowledged her doing.
My eyes narrowed, "If not for Anna's continuous threats, would I be relying on you to tell me everything that was going on? I trusted you, Fall. You could have say something. But instead, you lied. Did you think it was fun for me to know about their past?"
I raised my voice, "I did this to save Jayden, to save my relationship!"
"But you" I pointed at her, "All you care is his empire, not his relationship or my feelings. If there was a checklist, his empire will definitely be your first priority. You don't care whether if he is hurt or not. You don't care if our relationship was threatened. You only just want the Solevan Holding to be safe and sound."
I smirked with tears dwelling at the edge of my eyes, "This must be the reason why I was approached to marry him ten years ago. He loved Anna but the reputation of the Solevan Holding doesn't allow. And so, you suggested the brilliant idea for him to marry me. That way, you all can use me to cover the negative news that were emerging from his relationship with Anna."
She looked down, wearing a remorseful expression on her face. "I... don't know what to say..."
"Then you don't have to say. And you shouldn't have come."
Fall turned and looked at me with pleading eyes. "Annie... I know I shouldn't have but I didn't have a choice. Can you just hear me out for one second? Jayden is- "
"Leave, Fall" I clenched my jaws, "Don't make me repeat myself"
I left her sitting alone staring in space as I headed upstairs. I didn't want to hear what she has to say. I would have heard it enough.
