CHAPTER FOUR
When Fall came to know about my actions walking out from Jayden, she suggested me to reconsider after I would talk to her about it. What kept me dumbfounded was my persistence to leave Jayden for his reputation, yet troubled as well that Jayden might have come back because of Anna. I did agree to her proposal, as I seek for comfort of the dilemma and pains that I had put myself through.
"Let's start talking about you."
I shrugged, "What's there to talk about? It's always about Anna Swire, isn't it?"
My eyes flickered to the side as I looked through the wide glass wall, observing the door that was at the corner. The door was shut closed. It seemed empty. Just before today, I was walking out on him and now I am here sitting in this space watching the office that he occupied. Where would he be right now? Is he going to come to the office? Will I see him again?
She followed my glimpse to the office room that I fixed my gaze on.
"Jayden's not in, but would probably be in after lunch."
"Yeah, you're right." I did a slight nod, "I was upset that I wasn't his priority, and I am not even sure if I am now."
Fall added, "What it is, was just a matter of fact. We wouldn't know what's Jayden's feelings were when he left Anna. It could probably be a coincidence just like he had explained - He made up his mind about leaving Anna just when you decided to leave him too."
I smirked, "I didn't know that coincidences can be so accurate and precise."
Fall let out a soft sigh. She walked over, pulling down the shades from the glass wall, giving me some privacy I supposed. I felt vulnerable, now that I was admitting the feelings I had for Jayden. And more so, sad to know that something did happen while my marriage went south.
Fall sat on the sofa, her hands held mine. "Sometimes you do have to trust that it is a coincidence."
"Besides-"She continued, "There were no reasons why he had to lie about having feelings for you if he's not"
"Why?"
Fall let out a sigh, "Having to go through divorce and to only ask for your hands again were juicy news."
"Trust me" She patted on my hand, "That's the last thing he would want - himself to be all over the headlines"
"Is it?" I raised my eyebrow, "But it does create free publicity for him."
"Jayden doesn't need publicity" Fall stared at me in disbelief, "He is already famous enough even without these juicy news. "
--
Just as the clock touched noon, we walked along the aisle of the office. As we walked past Jayden's office, I heard mumbling coming from his office. He is here. As our feet brought us to the lift, Fall's subordinate, Carol, approached us with a pale stricken face.
"Something happened?"
Carol frowned as she bit her lips. She was clenching her hands tightly as she trembled. It seemed like something horrifying had startled this poor lady.
Fall reached out, waking Carol from her thoughts, "Carol?"
Carol held up her glance slowly. Her eyes paused for a moment on me before returning her glance back at Fall, "I-I bumped into Anna Swire. She was asking for Jayden. I told her... t-that she can come another day when Emily is around to receive her."
Anna was here?
Fall paused for a moment before exchanging glances with me. She turned back to Carol, "So... is she gone?"
Carol shook her head on instance before shifting her glance at Jayden's office. That bitch is here. Instinctively, I felt a sudden swarm of emotions creeping on me. The uncontrollable anger resisted my suppression as it overwhelmed any rational thoughts I could barely hold onto.
Fall held on my arm, cried in plead, "Annie, No"
My eyes turned towards Fall's grip before I noticed where I was, just inches away from the door. I inhaled deeply, reaching out my hands to the door knob, "I have to." - see what's up on her sleeve.
Without any hesitation, I swung open the door with a breeze of effort. And there it was as I expected, Jayden was sitting at the sofa enjoying a cup of tea with the woman. Flashback of her placing herself beside Jayden ran through my mind like a broken recorder. And there she was again, just like those photos I'd have seen in my entire marriage.
Anna turned around, startled for a brief moment before waving at me with that ever pretentious smile, "Hi Annie"
Fall followed in hurriedly but paused as she noticed the man that was eyeing at her in displease. He reprimanded, "Why are you allowing people barging into my office without my permission?"
I smirked at him trying so hard to control the situation, "I am not just anybody but your fiancée, your soon-to-be wife"
He held his forehead, "Annie, we can talk later after I finish my discussion here"
"What is it that you two were discussing?" My eyes narrowed at Anna with fuming anger as I continued, "About how to repay Miss Swire's father's five million debts? Or the photos that Miss Swire was intending to disclose to the reporters?"
Jayden returned his glance at Anna, looking confused, "What photos?"
She blinked, refocused, "I had no idea what your fiancée is talking about"
My emotions were heightened, words crashed out unaltered; "Don't you dare to deny. You were using those photos threatening me. Isn't that enough? Was it my fault that you two ended? Why are you putting it on me for your own mistake?!"
"Miss Swift, I understand that you cannot accept the fact I was Jayden's ex-girlfriend but it is already a past. And-" Shut Up!
I snapped. The natural reflex of my palm landed hard on Anna's face as the slap sounded as loud as a clap. She staggered backwards, clutching her face, eyes watering. Oh Shit. What have I done... My body stood froze. I couldn't react on instance at the collateral damage that I had caused myself.
Jayden cleared his throat, "Fall, lead Annie to the pantry"
Embarrassment clouded me. I shivered as my eyes turned sour. You can't cry. My throat constricted at the intensity of the overwhelming emotions. The anger that took over had condensed into fragments of shame and heartache. I couldn't lift my head looking at the man that spoke in a flat tone. He must be angry that I slapped Anna...
Fall held my arms as I fall short to the woman who was staging a hysterical crying, "Let's go" as she led me out of the place that I didn't want to stay any longer.
