Chapter 14
Dakoda
I should've known Marc was a jerk. He was just being nice to me so that he could add me to the list of girls he had already swapped spit with. I didn’t want to be on that list. I'd end up getting hurt, just like that Marissa girl who Marc had cheated on. No wonder she had been glaring at me all day. People had seen us walk up to the school together and she was still hurt over Marc cheating on her. I could hear the whispering at her table already.
Let the rumors begin.
Like I needed the drama in my life.
"Dakoda, are you okay?" Marc asked in a soft voice. I looked up at his sincerity and saw the emotions swirling in his eyes. Suspicion. Concern. A lingering hatred; just a sharp edge to his eyes. Irritation. Also a softness in them… just a fleck, but it was enough to allow me to keep talking to him. I could be his friend still. No one said I actually had to date him or anything. It's not like he was incredibly hot or that he made my heart flutter by just looking at me. Oh wait, he was and does. Silly me.
"Fine." My tone was sharp as I turned back to the picture of the wolf I was drawing. I had been dreaming about the same one all week and I had each detail imprinted on my brain. Marc's disbelief and hurt was evident from my sharp tone but he didn't say anything else on the subject.
"What are you drawing?" He asked, sounding curious. I shrugged, concentrating on my picture with intensity. I didn't really want anyone to look at my drawings. They were personal.
"Marc, stop being so nosey." Someone teased and Liza sat in the seat next to me. She had talked to me briefly numerous times throughout the years but this was the first time she ever sat by me. Must be because of Marc.
"I'm not nosey." He protested with an innocent expression, a gleam of humor in his eyes.
"You might as well be put in the middle of a face." Liza sighed, shaking her head. I snickered at Marc's expression.
"You're one to talk." He muttered and I looked to Liza, awaiting her reply. She grinned at him.
"Exactly. I'd be the mouth." She retorted snippily. I rolled my eyes and turned to my drawing with the slightest hint of annoyance. They were funny, I'd give them that, but I was used to working in silence, so it was almost unnerving to listen to them bickering at the table.
"What are you drawing?" Liza asked me, echoing Marc's earlier question. I just shrugged while Marc made a noise of protest.
"Didn't you just call me nosey for asking that?" His tone was surly.
"Something I had a dream about." I muttered as Liza and I both ignored Marc's comment, feeling a blush heat my cheeks when both Marc and Liza's attention was on me. I hated being the center of attention. Maybe that's why Piper and I got along so well. She craved the spotlight and I didn't. Liza's mouth formed an 'o' and she leaned forwards towards me in her seat.
"Is it a guy? A hot guy at that?" She asked seriously. I rolled my eyes and Marc's irritation spiked the air as he glared at her. She shrugged with an innocent air about her. "What? It's an innocent question!"
