Chapter 25

Dakoda

"Then what is?" Marc asked irritably, flipping his hair to the side. Backing a few steps away from him, I tried to erase the intense urge to kiss him again. Marc was clueless. I wasn't asking why everyone else wanted him to challenge the alpha.

"Why do you, personally, have to challenge the alpha." My voice was a mere murmur of sound. I felt his pain, and immediate dismissal of the question. His eyes grew darker, as if he was stuck in the past. That's probably it, I realized. So I reached out and touched his arm.

I was thrown into the most vivid emotional vision I ever had.

"Meeko!" A woman screamed, my head turning to see a younger version of Sammy running towards two figures. One was a boy who looked like a younger version of Marc, the other was a cruel looking man, with cold green-gray eyes, and hair buzzed short. His hands were clasped on the boy's throat. Father, rang through my mind.

"Sammy, stay back!" The man snarled, immediately causing her to stop. Alpha's orders- a small voice growled in the depths of my head.

Help our brother! Something sang into my mind, no, Marc's mind. These were his memories, not mine.

"Meeko." Sammy whimpered. The boy's face was turning red from lack of oxygen, then purple. My feet were suddenly moving faster than I had ever experienced, and I was running towards Meeko, and the Alpha. Marc's father.

"Stop! You're hurting him!" Marc's child voice cried. This was his brother. His twin. Another boy, with shaggy black hair, and piercing green eyes was watching in the distance, eyes horrified.

"Marc, stay where you are. You will stay out of my way as I teach your brother a lesson." The alpha snarled, cementing Marc's feet to the ground.

No! A voice was crying in my head. Help our brother!

I'm trying! Marc yelled back in his mind.

No. Try harder. Move. Visualize movement. The voice was harsh, trying to persuade Marc.

The boy named Meeko was struggling feebly in his father's grasp, feet dangling a cruel few inches from the ground. The black-haired boy in the distance was watching, looking distraught, but he had already been ordered to keep distant. Cayden, my mind whispered. This was going to kill Cayden.

One foot moved a fraction of an inch. Sweat already was pouring down Marc's forehead. His second foot inched forward. Next step. Slowly, he was gaining control over his body again. No one ever could go against the alpha's order.

Meeko's face was blue.

"Marc!" Someone snarled, and Marc's eyes snapped to his father. "Thought you'd be clever, didn't you? You brother is too influential on you, runt." Marc was no longer frozen with the alpha's orders, but rather with fear. "What do humans do when they have pests?" He turned a distance to where Trace was standing. Trace's eyes were haunted, a dark look in them, something I had never seen before. "They exterminate them, don't they?" He grinned in a twisted fashion, canines flashing.

Then his teeth plunged into Meeko's throat.

Screaming was everywhere. Coming from Sammy. Coming from the boy, Cayden. Coming from Trace. Coming from Marc. The alpha dropped the boy to the ground before turning around and walking away, wiping his mouth as he went along casually. Meeko clutched the ground as his body convulsed in spasms. Marc was the only one who could run forward, and he did, dropping to his dying twins' side.
