Dakoda
Who knew there were so many werewolves that went to my school? Jeff Diggers. That guy, Roy was it? Mia Roberts. That red-head who had been the screaming girl at the beach turned out to be Valerie Grayson. Chase Gonzalez. There were still others, too, sophomores and seniors at my school. No one else was allowed to come. Apparently everyone else was too young to be part of this meeting in particular.
Saxon was posted at the back door to keep watch. Liza and Cayden were upstairs, locking the windows, closing the doors, and the keeping an eye out to see if anyone was trying to snoop around where they shouldn’t be. I was sitting down with Marc on two folding chairs, so everyone else could squeeze onto the couches, and the floor. Marc squeezed my hand reassuringly when I squirmed, unused to sitting at the front of the room, with people staring at me, which was currently happening since I was undoubtedly a new wolf in the pack.
“I have news.” Marc began, getting straight to the point. All the eyes on me shifted to him, wariness and curiosity filling their gazes. “I’m not waiting for the end of the school year to challenge the alpha. I’m challenging him in three days.”
The whole room sucked in a sharp breath, instantly spewing their questions.
“Why so soon?”
“What happened?”
“Are you crazy?”
“Are you serious?”
“It’s because of her, isn’t it?” The question had me wincing inwardly, but on the outside, I just shot the boy a cool glare. This was my new pack. Marc was my mate. I needed to show them I could handle this.
We will handle this. Luna barked encouragingly. Marc cut them off with a wave of is hand.
“Yes, it’s partly because of her, but not in the reason you may be thinking.” His eyes were firmly on the questioner, who was frowning at me. “The alpha plans on using her against me, so why give him the chance?” His tone was cutting through the boy, causing the boy to wince, before he shot me another icy look, his animosity spiking the air.
Why does he not like us?
‘No clue.’
“What do you need us to do?” Jeff spoke up, eyes narrowing in thought. Marc exchanged a quick look with me, before giving Jeff a forced grin, cocky around the edges.
“Tell your parents to go to the pack house in three days. Not why, just when. Don’t tell anyone what’s going on, not even the younger wolves, and I need you to keep an eye out on them, okay?” Marc ordered.
“Aren’t we coming?” Roy snarled. Marc shook his head ‘no’. “Why not?”
“Because you have a party to plan.” He grinned, but it was fake around the edges, while his uncertainty swirled around me in a whirlwind. “It makes it seem as if everything else is normal.” Pushing back the emotion coming through our contact, I swallowed nervously.
“Look, I’m not staying here-” Roy began
“Then don’t.” I cut in. All eyes turned to me, causing me to regret my words for a moment. Either way, the words continued to drop from my lips. “Find someone else to take your place. Get the... others to help with the ‘party’, and drive up to the pack house in three days.” My own voice wavered slightly in the end, due to the fact they might not listen to me. No one in the room, besides Marc, knew who I was. Why should they listen?
