Chapter 27

Dakoda

Hot. I was so hot. The heat was unbearable. My throat felt like a desert. My tongue was a ton of lead. Cool water falls, ice-cream, snow, all things that now seem as though they never existed. Breathing hurt. Moving hurt. Everything hurt. There was a low ache in my bones, soreness to my muscles. My head was pounding against my skull like a second heartbeat, which by the way was a humming-bird in my chest. And man, was I practically starving.

Somewhere next to me I felt pressure. The desire to open my eyes was enormous, but they were stitched closed, refusing to open. That's when someone began talking.

"Hi Dakoda." The words began. "I know you can hear me, but the others don't know that quite yet. They all changed the easy way." I wonder what this voice was talking about. It was nice that someone was talking to me; I didn't have to worry over the pain as much if there was someone to distract me, someone who was taking off the edge. "I know this won't be a very good conversation because you can't talk back, but believe me, I know. You probably need someone to talk to you. The others are going to think I'm crazy sitting here like this and talking into empty air, but I honestly don't care." The person seemed truthful enough. "So I guess I should probably tell you my name now. I'm Cayden, a friend of Marc's, one of his pack mates."

Cayden… wasn't he the black haired boy from Marc's memories?

"Now, I'm going to tell you what's going on, okay?"

Okay, I whispered in my pain-filled haze of a mind.

"You drank Marc's blood." Cayden began. "He told you it would heal you, and it did. What he failed to mention were exactly two things, but I'm not allowed to tell you the first thing yet. The second thing is that you drinking his blood would turn you into one of us. A werewolf."

No. The word rang through my mind, causing the silent scream to greaten the pounding in my head. Marc had turned me into a werewolf? Was he insane? What was the other thing? Why wasn't Cayden allowed to tell me? What was going on? I was turning into a werewolf. This had to be a joke. A sick, horrible joke. I mean yea, wolves were cool. The moon was cool. Werewolves were even cool. But turning into a werewolf was not high on my list of top-priorities!

Especially, when I had no say in the matter.

"You don't like that, do you?" Cayden murmured. "If you're wondering how I know that, it's because you tensed…like a lot." Was that humor in his tone? "Well, I got Marc to let me watch you. I failed to mention I was going to tell you everything, but hey, he never told me I couldn't. Now, as you can probably tell, Turning hurts. Like hell. Times five."

Oh really? I would've never guessed!

"When you Shift the first time, it'll be worse."

I thought Marc had said it was easy! Why the lying, dirty, good for nothing-

"Now, it's easier for werewolves to Shift when they are born a werewolf. It hurts a lot more when you're a human, because when humans are born, your bones aren't made the way werewolve’s bones are. Theirs tend to be more flexible, and they are also stronger which is needed for the whole Shifting thing. You'll get used to it eventually, but the first couple times are pretty bad. I would know." There was a pause, as if he was allowing his words to sink in. "I'm here to help you through this whole thing, alright Dakoda? I was turned too… I was human once. Marc's brother Turned me because… well, he Turned me because I was in a bad accident..."
