Chapter 34

Dakoda

I winced when I heard raised voices in the living room. Sammy was yelling at Marc for Turning me the way he did, and at the moment, feeling his emotions the way they were, I felt bad about it. My yelling from yesterday had been whispers in a church compared to what Sammy had been saying a few moments before. In fact, she had taken my Turning worse than I had.

“Mom, give me a chance to explain-” Marc tried to cut Sammy off, but she was having none of it. She seemed furious, and exhausted, and absolutely petrified.

“There is nothing to explain Marc! It’s bad enough your brother did it to Cayden without asking-”

            “He was dying, mom-”

“Yet he still shouldn’t have done it! But he was still a child, so he didn’t know what he was doing, but you? Marc, you’re seventeen and she was not dying!”

“If you would let me explain-”

“There is nothing for you to explain!” Sammy’s voice was shrill. “I thought you were mature enough to handle all this but I guess I was wrong.” She quieted down in the end.

Marc was silent for the first time in the argument, and I felt his confusion and dawning realization at what she was saying, as well as a rising horror.

“Maybe I was too tough on you. This is obviously too much for you to handle... I shouldn’t have told you when you were so young. I should’ve been stricter with you. I should’ve...” She trailed off. “I should never have let you go along with this silly thing.” Was she talking about him becoming alpha?

Stop her from talking to him like that! That woman has no right to talk to Marc like that. She is hurting him. Can you not feel it? Luna had been begging me to comfort him non-stop since the arguing had begun.

“Mom, I can do this. You didn’t do anything wrong-” He began to protest, the first pain I had heard in his voice streaking the words. I could tell Liza, Saxon, and Cayden were as surprised as I was. This was real pain. The kind you get when you let someone you love down. The kind someone gets when they disappoint one of the only people they’ve tried to make proud.

“No you can’t. Marc... you have no idea what this means.” Sammy’s voice was almost a whisper, and even with my enhanced hearing, I had to lean forwards in my seat to hear her.

“What does it mean?” His voice was a pained, defensive growl. She let out a sigh, and an irritated noise.

“I can’t tell you.” She murmured.

“Well why-” Marc began haughtily, his hurt still stinging the air like a thousand angry hornets.

“Alpha’s orders!” She snapped back. Her pain and desperation was filling the air. “I’m sorry that I can’t tell you, or anyone for that matter.” She told him. My feet were suddenly leading me to where they were fighting.
