Chapter 17
Dakoda
"You're firing me?" I breathed into the phone, a small piece of something in my chest breaking off and falling into the pit of my stomach. My boss's voice came from the other line.
"Sorry Ms. Fields." He sighed, seemingly genuinely upset, but also relieved at the same time. "But moneys tight and you were one of the newest members-"
"No. I understand." I whispered. I understand you're a cold, heartless, moron who should go die in a hole. Where was I supposed to find another job? "Bye."
"Ms. Fields-" My boss began.
I hung up, not wanting any apology they were going to give me. What was I supposed to do for money now? Food, my cell phone bill, clothes when I could afford it, all of which was what I paid for with my job. What was I supposed to do? Does my stupid boss even know how hard it was for me to find that job, let alone the fact I need to find another one? Well, guess it's time to go back to bagging groceries. Yay.
"Girl, where's the grub?!" My dad roared from the living room, his impatience poking me with gnarled claws.
"Almost done!" I called back, trying to sound patient. Go get your own job and make your own friggin' food. I sighed, taking the spaghetti and pouring it into a bowl. Popping the garlic bread out of the oven, I put that on paper towel and brought it out to the living room where my dad was waiting, setting it on the T.V tray. "Beer or wine?" I asked softly. He chortled.
"Beer!" He barked while his friend guffawed beside him. Well sor-ree. Quickly going back to the kitchen I grabbed a few beers, bringing them back out to my dad. "Now get out of here." He ordered and I disappeared, taking refuge into my room until he was going to need me again.
It was Friday night, aka poker night. Just another thing to add to the wonderful pieces that made up my day. First, I woke up late, than my dad was pissed about something and didn't let me leave to school right away. I didn't get there till sometime in third hour. Marc wasn't at school today. It was a relief as well as horrible. I didn't have any of my homework done because I couldn't bring myself to do it. I wasn't really feeling up to anything these past few days. Some girls thought it would be just so hilarious to spill paint all over the drawing of the wolf I was making. Then I got home and my dad was pissed again. Now I got fired. Now I have to wait on my dad and he sicko friends. Need I mention that Piper was being prissy, and could apparently no longer be my friend? Leaning back onto my bed, I closed my eyes and recalled our conversation.
"Hey! Dakoda, we need to talk." Piper said, jogging up to me as I turned to go into my driveway, trying my best to decipher why her 'boyfriend' Blake –who was watching from Piper's porch - seemed so smug, and why she felt guilty.
"What about?" I asked, shooting a distrustful glance in Blake's direction. I really didn't like him. He was so… full of himself, to put it in nicer terms
"Well, um…" She started out in a whisper, sending a wary glance in Blake's direction. "I can't hang out with you anymore." She told me softly, her pity and guilt pulsing towards me. I felt my eyes narrow and glanced back to Blake who was watching us smugly.
