"Jonathan, hey!" I said maybe a little too enthusiastically. Truth is, I wasn't really happy to see him.
"Hey, babe." He stood up, strode over, and wrapped his arms around my waist. I noticed Ansel's face immediately fall to a frown. I quickly ended the embrace.
"I called you," Jonathan said, looking at me, to Ansel, then back to me.
I palmed the pockets of my jean shorts. "Shit, sorry; my phones probably still outside."
"It's alright. I called your house and your mom said you were probably over here so..."
"Right, um... You remember Ansel?" I gestured to him behind me.
Ansel smiled slightly.
"Yeah... hey." We stood there awkwardly silent for a moment until Jonathan said;"You want to go see a movie or something?"
"Yeah, can you just wait outside for me?" I told him.
"Uh." He shot Ansel a glare.
"Please," I said quietly. He rolled his eyes and walked back outside.
"Are you seriously going with him; after what just happened?" Ansel shouted.
"Hush. He's right outside," I whispered fiercely. "And what almost happened..."
"I can't believe you, Hadley."
"I care about you, a lot. But I can't do that to him, I can't just leave him high and dry when he came all the way here-"
"He lives right down the goddamned road! You're leaving me high and dry."
He reached for my hand. I didn't push him away. "I want you, Hadley. I could be so much better than him-"
"It wouldn't be fair-"
"To who? You don't want him, and you know it. It isn't fair to you."
I stood up on my tip toes and pressed a kiss to his cheek. "I'm sorry," I told him, and left.

When I arrived home from the movies with Jonathan I immediately called Ansel. I missed him and I regretted leaving him.
"I'm such a fucking idiot!" I screamed into the receiver as I left my 10th message on his voicemail.
He was such a fantastic person, and Jonathan really wasn't. What was wrong with me? The aching in my chest deepened when I received a text from Jonathan.
Had fun tonight, babe :)
God, couldn't he just leave me alone?
I didn't reply, just rolled over on my bed and tried to decipher my feelings. I was attracted to Ansel, on a profound level that I'd never felt before. He was fun and interesting and beautiful. Jonathan was cute, but he was about as fun as playing board games with my grandparents. So what was I still doing with him? I didn't want to hurt him. For some reason, I had liked him, until I met Ansel that is. And he'd never done anything to me. School would start in just a week; I could dump him there, where he couldn't make a scene or anything. He was pretty popular, and I knew he wouldn't do anything to screw up his rep. Just as I snuggled deeper into my bed, and was about to listen to every depressing song I'd ever downloaded, my phone rang.
Dung, the screen read. Dung! I had so much to tell him. I quickly accepted the call.
"Oh my god."
"What? What did I miss with the hunk next door?" Dung asked.
I laughed. "So much."
"Spill for fucks sake!"
I told him about how Ansel and I talked a lot and how we connected, and our almost kiss, and almost being caught by Jonathan, our fight, me leaving, and me realizing I liked him.
"Go for it with the hunk. That Jonathan has about as much soul as Miley Cyrus."
I laughed. "I don't want to hurt the guy, he seems pretty into me."
"Who wouldn't be? You just gotta be honest with him, you can't lead him on."
"I know, I know..." I sighed.
Dung's ma yelled something in Vietnamese in the background.
"Shit, ma's in a pissy mood; talk to you later, babe."
"Bye, Dung."
