My feet tumbled through the soft, damp grass in my front yard. I wasn’t sure where they were taking me, but at the time I didn’t care. I closed my eyes, breathing in and out slowly trying to calm down. When I opened them I was in the middle of the road. I felt arms tugging on my arms but I couldn’t tell whose. There was something bright, too bright, coming at me. I wanted to move, I willed myself, but I couldn’t. The arms looped around my waist and under my thighs, picking me up. The arms were strong but my vision was still to foggy to see whose arms they were.
“Hadley, what the hell?” It was Ashton. He set me down on the porch and kneeled down in front of me. And I wrapped my arms around his neck.
“I can’t handle this,” I whispered. God, I was losing my mind. I couldn’t wrap my mind around anything happening around me, just my big brother and his firm, safe embrace.
“Its fine, everything- its fine,” he said quietly into my hair. I knew it wasn’t.
So Mom was cheating, not Dad. And with another woman, not a man. My mom was a lesbian. Or she was just experimenting, having fun, fooling around.
I heard footsteps near us, but I didn’t pull away from Ashton, I couldn’t. A car door slammed and tires screeched and then silence. That’s all I wanted in that moment; complete and utter silence.
“C’mon,” Ashton said and pulled me up.
I didn’t want to go back inside, didn’t want to face my mom. I didn’t know how I felt, just that there was a pounding in my head, a lump in my throat, and an ache in the pit of my stomach. Ashton led me to his car and I slipped into the passenger’s seat as he slid into the driver’s.
“Where are we going?” I asked him.
“Dung’s,” he answered.
“Wait.” I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Ansel’s number.
“Come over,” I told him.
“Right now? I said eight-“
“Were not going to that party, some things happened, just come over and get in the back of the red Sonata in my driveway.”
I heard shuffling in the background. “Okay.” Just the sound of his voice made me feel better. It was deep and soothing. I ended the call.
“Who was that?” Ashton asked.
“A friend, he’s coming with us.”
Ashton rolled his eyes. “He?”
Just as I was about to reply, Ansel opened the back door of the car and slipped inside.
“Your friend?” Ashton looked at me.
“Hey, I’m Ansel. Nice to meet you” Ansel set out his hand. Ashton simply looked at it.
“Ash, now is not the time to play overprotective big brother. Take us to Dung’s please,” I begged him.
He revved up the engine and backed out of the driveway.
